Just a couple of days into spring practice, BYU has suffered a significant hit to what's one of the top returning defenses in the country.

Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall confirmed after practice Wednesday that cornerback Trent Trammell has a torn ACL and, in all likelihood, will not play in 2013.  Trammell suffered the injury during a non-contact drill Monday, the first of BYU's 15 spring practice sessions.

Trammell will undergo surgery a week from today to repair the damage.

"We don't believe he has a chance to play this year, so (he'll take) a redshirt and play the following year," Mendenhall said. "He's a fantastic kid and it was hard for all of us to watch that injury. … He just planted in the turf, knee shifted around him and it's just really hard to see."

Trammell had just transferred to BYU from the JUCO ranks, and was already seeing reps with the first-team defense before going down with the injury.  By all accounts, Trammell would've exited spring and entered summer camp as the presumptive starter.

After presumably sitting out this season, Trammel, who played at the City College of San Francisco last year, will retain two years of eligibility beginning in 2014.
