Bucking a trend in broadcast news, Channing Smith has spent his entire career with one company, in one market! Channing Smith began his career in radio with Citadel Communications (then Dick Broadcasting) in 1981 after studying at the University of Tennessee and the Professional Academy of Broadcasting. A short stint as a dee-jay was detoured by a full-time opening in the News Department. It wasn't long before Channing became the morning anchor on WIVK's "Great Day in the Morning" show featuring Claude Tomlinson. He's been around long enough to recall covering the opening ceremonies of the Knoxville World's Fair in 1982 and the Blizzard of '93. In his 30+ years as a broadcaster, Channing has won numerous state, regional and national awards, including the 2000 Broadcaster of the Year honor presented by the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcaster's Association. He was also a member of the news team named the nation's best by the Radio and Television News Director's Association. When he's away from the newsroom, Channing enjoys the Smoky Mountains, NASCAR, UT football and sleep!
