Officials say racist comments and pornographic images disrupted a virtual panel discussion being held by the University of Tennessee. The interruption came near the end of a panel called “Women as Change Agents.”
One of the featured speakers was Carlotta Walls LaNier, one of the Little Rock Nine who integrated Little Rock Central High School in the 1950s.
Dean Mike Wirth says there were about 100 students participating Wednesday when, “All of a sudden we heard the F-word and the N-word. That got repeated a couple of times. Then they inserted a horrible video.” Wirth sent an email apologizing to participants. He says they’ve upgraded security so it won’t happen again.
This is UT’s annual Diversity and Inclusion Week. Wirth says it’s unfortunate that this happened during what’s been a great week.
