‘Abortion Trafficking’ Soon to be a Criminal Offense in Tennessee

Nashville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) Governor Bill Lee has signed a bill that would make “abortion trafficking” a criminal offense in Tennessee.

The bill, HB 1895, creates a criminal offense of abortion trafficking of a minor and provides a civil action against a person taking a pregnant minor out of state to get an abortion.

“Abortion – As introduced, creates the criminal offense of abortion trafficking of a minor; provides for a civil action against a person committing the offense of abortion trafficking of a minor for the wrongful death of an unborn child that was aborted. – Amends TCA Title 8, Chapter 6; Title 29; Title 37 and Title 39,” the bill reads.

The law will go into effect on July 1. It passed through the General Assembly in April with little opposition.

Anyone who violates the “abortion trafficking” law will face a Class A misdemeanor with a sentence of 11 months and 29 days in jail.
