Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – The University of Tennessee has appointed longtime public servant Jim Thomas as interim vice president of the Institute for Public Service (IPS), with the role taking effect October 1. University leaders also announced the launch of a national search to find a permanent successor.
Thomas returns to UT after a distinguished career in public service, including previous leadership within the institute. Before retiring in 2017, he served as executive director of the Municipal Technical Advisory Service, where he worked closely with communities across Tennessee to strengthen local governments and improve public service delivery.
UT System President Randy Boyd praised the appointment, saying Thomas’ experience and understanding of IPS’s mission make him well-positioned to lead during the transition period.
The university has assembled a search committee chaired by UT System Executive Vice President Dr. Linda Martin. The group includes representatives from across the university system, state organizations and local government partners.
IPS plays a key role in supporting Tennessee communities through training, technical assistance and economic development programs. UT leaders say they are committed to finding a new vice president who will expand the institute’s impact statewide.
A public website has also been launched to share updates and allow community input throughout the search process.
