Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – As extreme summer temperatures impact East Tennessee, Knoxville officials are highlighting a wide network of cooling centers and air-conditioned spaces available to help residents stay safe.
Designated cooling and day centers across the city open or extend hours when temperatures reach between 85 and 90 degrees. Knox Area Rescue Ministries on North Broadway operates daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with shelter space opening during high heat or severe weather. The Volunteer Ministry Center Resource Center nearby also provides daytime relief, with a “white flag” alert triggering extended cooling hours when temperatures hit 90 degrees.
The Fig Tree Connection Center on Kingston Pike offers regular hours throughout the week, with additional afternoon hours activated in extreme heat. Vestal United Methodist Church is also frequently opened during heat emergencies, typically operating from noon until 8 p.m.
In addition, public spaces such as Knox County libraries and city recreation centers remain open during normal hours to provide air-conditioned relief. A 24/7 option is available at the ReLAUNCH space under the I-40 overpass near KARM.
Outdoor cooling options including splash pads at Market Square, Krutch Park, and World’s Fair Park, along with public pools like Inskip and Ed Cothren, are also open during the day.
The City of Knoxville has also opened two primary cooling centers through July 30. The Knoxville Recreation Center on South Park Lane and the Knoxville Public Library on East Montgomery Avenue are available during regular operating hours, with the potential for extended service if the heat continues.
Officials recommend calling ahead or dialing 2-1-1 to confirm hours and availability, as conditions and activation times can change.
