SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (Story courtesy of WVLT (WOKI) – Authorities have identified two Knoxville residents who were killed when their vehicle collided with a fire engine in Scott County, Kentucky.
According to the Scott County Coroner’s Office, Darren Paul Nelson, 61, and Shauna Colleen Nelson, 62, both of Knoxville, died in the crash. Investigators say the couple was traveling home when they encountered slower-moving traffic and lost control of their vehicle.
The fatal collision happened around 2:19 p.m. as emergency crews were responding to a separate single-vehicle crash.
Fire officials said the Nelsons’ vehicle struck the rear of a fire engine that was parked at the scene of the earlier incident. The driver and front-seat passenger, identified as Darren and Shauna Nelson, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said two passengers riding in the back seat survived the crash and were transported to UK HealthCare for treatment. The Scott County Coroner’s Office reported both were listed in stable condition.
Three firefighters who were on the fire apparatus at the time of the collision were also taken to local hospitals as a precaution, according to the Scott County Fire Department.
Investigators said witnesses reported rainy weather and slick road conditions in the area when the crash occurred. Officials have not yet determined an official cause of the collision.
The Scott County Coroner’s Office said both victims’ bodies were taken to Frankfort for autopsies.
The crash remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 12.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the Nelson family with funeral and final expenses.
