Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – Two men were injured in an overnight shooting near downtown Knoxville, and police are continuing to investigate what led to the gunfire.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers located a gunshot victim near the intersection of Summit Hill Drive and Hall of Fame Drive at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The victim, an adult man, was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The victim told officers the shooting happened in the area of First Creek Park. Responding officers went to the park and found numerous spent and unspent shell casings scattered around the scene.
At about the same time, police learned that a second adult male gunshot victim had arrived at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center seeking treatment. His injuries are also believed to be non-life-threatening.
Investigators have determined that a large gathering of people was taking place at First Creek Park when gunfire broke out. Detectives have not yet determined what prompted the shooting.
Since the incident, KPD Homicide Unit detectives have interviewed at least a dozen potential witnesses in an effort to piece together what happened.
As of Sunday, no suspects had been arrested or charged, and investigators said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
