COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A 26-year-old Oklahoma woman was killed and another passenger was injured after an off-road utility vehicle left the roadway and rolled down a mountainside in Cocke County on Friday afternoon.
According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, on Grassy Fork Road near Snowbird Mountain.
Troopers said Amber Wiggins, 26, of Oklahoma, was driving a 2025 Can-Am Defender southbound on Grassy Fork Road while descending from Snowbird Mountain with two passengers.
Investigators determined the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and began rolling down the mountainside. During the crash, the Can-Am overturned and struck a tree before coming to a final, uncontrolled resting position.
Amber Wiggins was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash but suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead as a result of the accident.
Authorities said one passenger, Kayla Wiggins, 29, of Oklahoma, was not wearing a seat belt and sustained injuries in the crash. Officials have not released information regarding the extent of her injuries or her current condition.
A second passenger, Patricia Wiggins, 54, of Oklahoma, was wearing a seat belt and was not reported to have been injured.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation did not indicate any criminal wrongdoing. Troopers confirmed that no charges are being filed in connection with the fatal crash.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances that caused the utility vehicle to leave the roadway.
