ROCKY TOP, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — New improvements designed to make Norris Lake more accessible and safer for visitors are now complete.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in partnership with Tennessee State Parks, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning to celebrate the addition of a BoardSafe adaptive kayak launch and a new courtesy pier along Oak Grove Road in Campbell County.
Officials say the upgrades are intended to improve the experience for both kayakers and boaters, while helping reduce congestion at traditional boat ramps.
TVA representative Brian Ross said the project grew out of discussions aimed at enhancing public access to Norris Dam State Park.
“A couple years ago, we had a meeting with state parks, and we talked about Norris Dam State Park having better water access,” Ross said. “The icing on the cake today is we had the ribbon cutting for the BoardSafe kayak launch and courtesy pier.”
The adaptive kayak launch is designed to assist users of all abilities, providing a safer and more stable way to enter the water. The courtesy pier offers additional space for boaters, allowing for smoother transitions on and off the lake.
Ross noted that separating kayak launches from boat traffic is a key benefit of the new setup.
“It’s kind of tough to launch a kayak at boat ramps sometimes because of the traffic,” he said. “What this BoardSafe area does is separates the boat courtesy and the kayak launch.”
TVA frequently partners with local, state, and federal agencies to maintain and improve public lands and recreational opportunities throughout the Tennessee Valley.
Officials say the Norris Lake improvements are part of ongoing efforts to enhance outdoor access while prioritizing safety and ease of use for all visitors.
