Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT)- The City of Knoxville is committing significant funding to improve Chilhowee Park as part of its 2026–27 capital improvements budget.
City leaders have approved $2 million per year for park upgrades, totaling $10 million over five years through 2031. The funding will focus primarily on infrastructure improvements, particularly on the north side of the park, though specific projects have not yet been finalized.
Mayor Indya Kincannon proposed the annual funding, with City Council approving the investment as part of the broader capital improvements program.
Community input will play a key role in determining how the money is spent. The Chilhowee Park Advisory Group, formed earlier this year, is working with residents and stakeholders to help shape a long-term vision for the space.
Leaders with the Tennessee Valley Fair, which has long been held at the park, say they are encouraged by the investment and its potential to benefit the community for generations.
The funding is part of a larger $40.6 million capital improvements budget for fiscal year 2027. The plan includes major investments in engineering projects, road paving, safety improvements and neighborhood redevelopment.
Additional projects tied to Chilhowee Park include a nearly complete study of the Loves Creek watershed aimed at addressing flooding around Lake Ottosee, as well as a planned $50 million modernization of the Jacob Building beginning in 2027.
The city is also expanding park maintenance efforts with a dedicated Public Service Department crew assigned full-time to Chilhowee Park.
Officials say the improvements are designed to support the park’s long-term sustainability while enhancing its role as a major community gathering space.
