KNOXVILLE, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Ijams Nature Center is set to expand recreational opportunities at Mead’s Quarry thanks to a donation of more than $45,000 from Grayson Subaru.
The funding will support Phase Two of the Ijams Nature Playscape, along with improvements to the dock at Quarry Lake.
Ijams CEO Amber Parker said the planned dock upgrades are designed to create a larger and safer swimming area. The current U-shaped dock sits in a shallow cove, but the new design will extend farther into deeper water and include additional ladders to improve access for visitors.
Parker said the changes will help address safety concerns as visitors often attempt to enter the water in areas not designed for swimming.
“The Quarry Lake doesn’t really have a lot of swim areas,” Parker said. “So having more area for safe access is a big part of this project.”
Mead’s Quarry is a swim-at-your-own-risk location with no lifeguards, and officials remind visitors to follow all posted safety guidelines and use flotation devices when needed.
The donation will also help complete the second phase of the Nature Playscape, which is already under construction. The play area will incorporate natural materials and former quarry features to create an accessible environment for children and individuals with mobility challenges.
Ijams officials hope the new playscape and quarry improvements will be ready by the end of the year.
