MEIGS COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A Meigs County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering at home after authorities say he was attacked and briefly knocked unconscious during an apparent ambush Wednesday.
According to the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened while the deputy was conducting routine patrol duties in the area of Peakland Road and Highway 68.
Investigators said the deputy made contact with a man and exited his patrol vehicle to speak with him. At that point, a second individual allegedly attacked the deputy.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy “was ambushed by a second subject and struck with an unknown object.”
Authorities said the blow briefly rendered the deputy unconscious. While the deputy was incapacitated, both suspects fled the scene before law enforcement could take them into custody.
The injured deputy, whose name has not been released, received medical attention and has since returned home, where he is recovering from his injuries.
The sheriff’s office has not released descriptions of the suspects or provided additional details about the object used in the attack. The investigation remains active.
Officials are now asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible.
