MCMINN COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – A former McMinn County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been charged with aggravated assault by domestic violence after deputies investigated a reported domestic incident Sunday evening.
According to McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy, deputies responded to a residence on Highway 39 West near Athens after receiving information about a possible domestic situation involving former sheriff’s office employee Caleb Latham.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with Latham and his girlfriend. Sheriff Guy said the initial investigation quickly revealed the situation was more serious than first reported.
“The deputies could see there was definitely a verbal argument going on, both were upset, and of course, like in many homes locally, firearms were present,” Guy said.
According to the sheriff, Latham voluntarily left the residence while deputies continued interviewing his girlfriend, identified as Ms. Bidwell, and other individuals connected to the incident.
As the investigation progressed, authorities determined criminal charges were warranted.
“Latham left voluntarily, but as the interview with Ms. Bidwell and others continued, it became evident that the situation was much more serious,” Guy said.
Investigators subsequently obtained warrants charging Latham with aggravated assault by domestic violence.
Latham turned himself in to authorities Monday afternoon.
Sheriff Guy noted that Latham previously worked for the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office from August 2018 until June 2026, when he resigned to pursue employment in the private sector.
“Domestic issues are often difficult, especially when it involves a friend or someone we’ve worked with,” Guy said. “But we have to consider the safety and welfare of everyone involved.”
Authorities have not released additional details about the allegations.
Latham is expected to appear in court at a later date. The case remains pending.
