TOWNSEND, Tenn. (WOKI) — Appalachian traditions will take center stage next month as Dancing Bear Lodge & Appalachian Bistro hosts the 4th Annual Appalachian Homecoming on Saturday, Aug. 1, bringing together musicians, chefs, artisans, farmers and cultural leaders for a full day of immersive experiences celebrating Southern Appalachian heritage.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Dancing Bear Lodge in Townsend and will focus on this year’s theme, “The Building Blocks of Appalachian Culture.”
Organizers say Appalachian Homecoming is designed to move beyond historical displays and give guests the opportunity to experience the region’s living traditions firsthand through workshops, demonstrations, storytelling, music and food.
Visitors will have the chance to interact directly with cultural ambassadors and experts while learning about the customs, craftsmanship and community values that continue to shape life in the Appalachian region.
“Appalachian culture has always been rooted in community,” said Kim Mitchell, director of tourism for the Blount Partnership.
“Whether people gather around a dinner table, on a front porch or in a field, those shared experiences create connections that span generations. Appalachian Homecoming celebrates those connections and traditions while inviting guests to come be part of the story.”
Located in Townsend, often known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies,” Dancing Bear Lodge has built its reputation around authentic East Tennessee experiences. Organizers say the annual gathering expands on that mission by creating opportunities for visitors to engage with the people and traditions that help define the region.
Throughout the day, guests can participate in educational sessions, watch live demonstrations, enjoy regional cuisine, attend musical performances and explore the enduring influence of Appalachian culture on the South.
The event also highlights Townsend’s growing appeal as a destination for travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences and outdoor recreation near Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
