Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – Knoxville Police Department detectives are asking for the public’s help as they investigate what left a man with life-threatening injuries early Saturday morning.
Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, to the area of Howard Baker Jr. Avenue and Honor Our Troops Drive after receiving a report of a man walking down the roadway while bleeding from his head.
When officers arrived, they found 50-year-old Truman Chapman suffering from a significant head injury. According to KPD, Chapman was unable to clearly explain what had happened.
Police said Chapman was initially alert and conscious and was evaluated by AMR personnel at the scene. Officers learned Chapman had an outstanding Loudon County warrant for failure to appear on a previous public intoxication charge. As officers were transporting Chapman to meet Loudon County Sheriff’s Office deputies, his condition worsened significantly.
Chapman was instead taken by ambulance to the UT Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized in extremely critical condition.
Investigators later determined that Chapman left Isabella Tower sometime after 10 p.m. riding a personally owned electric scooter. Detectives have not located the scooter and say no additional evidence has been found to explain how Chapman sustained his injuries.
The Knoxville Police Department is seeking witnesses or any information that could help determine what occurred between the time Chapman left Isabella Tower and when he was found injured.
