KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – A Knoxville man is facing numerous charges after authorities say he led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through West Knoxville before crashing his vehicle late Sunday night.
According to warrants obtained by WVLT News, deputies first spotted a vehicle driven by 67-year-old Jimmy Stout traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 around 11:45 p.m. with its muffler dragging on the roadway.
When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, authorities say Stout refused to pull over and instead exited the interstate onto Kingston Pike.
Investigators said the pursuit continued westbound on Kingston Pike, where Stout allegedly accelerated to speeds of up to 108 miles per hour near the Lovell Road area.
The chase came to an end when Stout’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a ditch near Everett Road.
Deputies said Stout attempted to exit the vehicle after the crash but became stuck due to the vehicle’s position. Authorities reported that he then refused repeated commands to leave the vehicle and submit to arrest.
According to warrants, deputies ultimately deployed a Taser before taking Stout into custody.
After being handcuffed, Stout reportedly told deputies he failed to stop because he was nervous.
A subsequent investigation revealed several alleged violations involving the vehicle. Authorities said the vehicle was not properly registered, displayed a license plate assigned to another vehicle without a valid expiration sticker, carried a VIN linked to a different person, and did not have proof of insurance.
Following the crash, Stout was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
He now faces multiple charges, including:
- Evading arrest with risk of death or injury
- Reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon
- Resisting arrest
- Altering a license plate
- Financial responsibility law violations
- Muffler law violations
Authorities also discovered Stout had two outstanding DUI warrants from Knoxville.
The case remains pending in court.
