STRAWBERRY PLAINS, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A potentially dangerous situation on the Holston River ended with a successful rescue Friday afternoon after volunteer responders located a missing kayaker and safely brought him back to shore.
According to Knox County Rescue, crews were dispatched to McBee Ferry Park after receiving a report of a missing boater on the river.
The search began when one of the kayaker’s friends discovered the kayak floating unattended in the water. Unable to locate the paddler nearby, the friend contacted emergency responders for assistance.
Knox County Rescue quickly mobilized and deployed teams to search the river. Rescue personnel launched a water search and began scanning the area for signs of the missing kayaker.
After a brief search, crews successfully located the paddler in the waterway. Officials said the kayaker was found safe and uninjured.
Rescuers transported him back to the boat ramp at McBee Ferry Park, where he was reunited with his friends.
In a statement following the operation, Knox County Rescue thanked its volunteers for their commitment to responding when emergencies arise throughout the community.
“We are thankful for a successful outcome and especially grateful for our dedicated volunteers who continue to answer the call when our community needs them,” the agency said.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of river safety and the critical role volunteer rescue organizations play in responding to emergencies across East Tennessee.
