MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Tennessee Department of Human Services office in Madisonville.
According to the Madisonville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the DHS office in the 600 block of Anderson Street at approximately 4:53 p.m. after receiving reports that a former employee was inside the building armed with a firearm.
When officers arrived, they located the individual and determined the person was carrying two pistols, according to police.
Authorities said the individual refused to comply with officers’ commands.
During the encounter, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual.
Following the shooting, officers immediately rendered medical aid while awaiting the arrival of Monroe County EMS and Madisonville Fire and Rescue personnel.
The injured person was later transported by UT Lifestar to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators said no officers, Department of Human Services employees, or members of the public were injured during the incident.
Officials have not released the identity of the person who was shot, and no information has been provided regarding the extent of the individual’s injuries.
The Madisonville Police Department said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
The officer’s identity is not being released at this time.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has assumed responsibility for the independent investigation and will review the events leading up to and during the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the appropriate prosecutor for review.
