Knox County, TN (WOKI) – A Knox County home suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out Wednesday morning, prompting a lengthy response from firefighters.
According to rural metro fire officials, the Knox County Communications District received a report of a possible house fire at approximately 11:20 a.m. Crews responded to a home at 5405 Parkdale Road and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the residence.
Firefighters quickly launched an interior attack but encountered intense fire conditions on the upper floor of the home. Officials said the flames had extended into numerous hidden void spaces within the structure, making the fire difficult to contain.
As conditions worsened, incident commanders transitioned from an interior firefighting operation to a defensive attack. Crews then deployed a ladder truck and directed water through an opening in the roof in an effort to suppress the fire from above.
After more than two hours of firefighting efforts, the blaze was declared under control and extinguished at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Fortunately, no one was inside the home when the fire started, and no injuries to firefighters were reported.
The residence sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage and has been deemed uninhabitable.
The homeowner’s two dogs survived the incident. However, officials said a family cat was overcome by smoke and did not survive.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
