KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 5 Tennessee took Game 1 of Friday’s scheduled doubleheader against No. 2 Texas A&M 5-1 before Game 2 was suspended due to weather in the bottom of the second inning. The final game of the series will resume on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Senior Sophia Nugent headlined game one with a standout performance on senior weekend, launching two home runs and driving in four runs.
Sage Mardjetko was strong in the circle as she allowed one run on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts over five innings of work. She picked up her 11th win of the season and her fourth in league play.
Tennessee (40-12) struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, as Nugent put the Lady Vols on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice. Sophomore Gabby Leach followed with a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 2-0.
In the fourth inning, Nugent hit a solo home run, extending UT’s lead to 3-0. The blast was her career-best 12th of the season. With two outs in the fifth inning, Nugent launched her second home run of the game—a two-run blast to put Tennessee up five.
Junior Karlyn Pickens entered in relief in the top of the sixth and locked down the victory, tossing two innings while allowing just one hit and recording one strikeout.
Texas A&M (42-9, 15-7 SEC) scored its lone run in the sixth inning on a single to center.
GAME TWO SUSPENDED
With weather moving through the Knoxville area, Friday’s second game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning. The game will resume on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET with the Aggies holding a 5-0 advantage.
CHECK THE STATS
Freshman Saviya Morgan went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of walks in the win. She extended her hit streak to eight straight games with her third-inning bunt single.
