KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Story courtesy of WVLT) – A 19-year-old man was killed in a crash in Cocke County Sunday, according to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on State Route 73, according to the report. It killed James Waylon Gossett. A 17-year-old, who the report did not identify, was driving a Honda Pilot, running from the Newport Police Department, when they lost control.
“As the Honda passed 1492 TN-73, it lost control and slid off the side of the roadway, striking a tree and coming to an uncontrolled final rest,” the report said.
The driver was airlifted with serious injuries, the report said, and Gossett was pronounced dead on the scene.
Sunday evening, the Centerview Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook Gossett was a member.
“Thank you for your service and dedication to our department,” the Centerview VFD post said. “Please keep his family, our [department] and his friends in your prayers for the upcoming days, weeks, months and years.”
At this time, it isn’t clear why the two were driving from NPD officers, but we’ve reached out to the department for more information.
