Maryville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) — An East Tennessee educator is earning national recognition for her work in the classroom.
Nicole Whitecotton, an eighth grade humanities teacher at Clayton-Bradley Academy in Maryville, has been named a finalist for National History Day’s Teacher of the Year award. She is the only teacher from Tennessee among the 78 educators selected nationwide.
National History Day is a nonprofit organization that encourages students and teachers to explore history through hands-on research and competition. Whitecotton’s students participate in the program each year, diving into primary sources like archives and historical newspapers to better understand the past.
Whitecotton, who has taught for more than a decade, says she is passionate about helping students connect with history in meaningful ways.
She admitted she’s both excited and nervous about the recognition, calling it an honor to represent Tennessee at the national level.
The award winner will be selected by a committee of educators and announced on June 18. The top honoree will receive a $5,000 cash prize.
Whitecotton says, regardless of the outcome, she’s proud of the work she’s done and the impact she’s had on her students.
