LaFollette, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – A man accused of attempting to kill his girlfriend in LaFollette has been arrested following a months-long investigation, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Marshal David Jolley announced Tuesday that Alejandro Mancera Canchola was taken into custody in Indianapolis. Investigators say the case stems from a violent attack in 2024 on South Avenue in LaFollette.
According to authorities, Canchola allegedly attacked his girlfriend, with whom he shares a child, leaving her with severe injuries. During the incident, officials say the victim was able to convince him to step away momentarily by urging him to take their baby to a neighbor.
That pause gave the woman an opportunity to escape. Despite her injuries, she managed to reach the street, where passing drivers spotted her and helped her get medical attention. She was treated at a hospital and has since recovered.
Investigators say Canchola fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, prompting an extensive search. The case remained active as local law enforcement worked alongside federal authorities.
Officials say after being appointed LaFollette Police Chief in January 2025, Matt Forsyth pledged to continue pursuing the suspect. During the investigation, authorities discovered Canchola is also wanted in Mexico in connection with a homicide involving his ex-wife.
U.S. Marshals ultimately located him working at a restaurant in Indianapolis, where he was arrested without incident.
Canchola is now being held in Indiana with an immigration detainer and is expected to face attempted first-degree murder charges. Additional legal proceedings, including possible extradition, may follow.
