NEWPORT, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A sinkhole caused by heavy rain and thunderstorms has forced a road closure in Newport.
According to Newport Police Chief Scott Lamb, Main Street is shut down between Jefferson Avenue and Broadway as crews evaluate damage caused by the sinkhole.
Officials say the closure was put in place out of an abundance of caution to protect drivers and will remain until the roadway can be fully inspected and repaired.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the safety of the traveling public,” Lamb said.
During the closure, all traffic is being detoured from Main Street via Jefferson Avenue to Broadway.
The sinkhole is one of several issues reported across East Tennessee following heavy rainfall Sunday morning.
