KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A former Knoxville police officer has been indicted following an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation into allegations involving conduct at a death scene.
According to the TBI, special agents began investigating allegations involving Shigeki Nagamoto, born Nov. 19, 1987, in June at the request of Sixth Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen.
Investigators said Nagamoto was employed by the Knoxville Police Department at the time of the alleged incident.
During the investigation, agents gathered evidence indicating that in December 2024, while responding to the scene of a reported death, Nagamoto allegedly exposed and inappropriately touched part of a deceased woman’s body.
On Wednesday, the Knox County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Nagamoto with one count of Abuse of a Corpse.
Authorities said Nagamoto turned himself in Wednesday evening and was booked into the Knox County Jail. His bond was set at $10,000.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation emphasized that the indictment contains allegations and accusations that have not been proven in court.
As with all criminal defendants, Nagamoto is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt through the judicial process.
The case will now proceed through the Knox County court system, where prosecutors and defense attorneys will have the opportunity to present evidence and arguments before the court.
