KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A colorful mural of Dolly Parton in downtown Knoxville’s Strong Alley has become a place of remembrance as fans continue honoring the beloved country music legend following her death on Aug. 25 after a battle with cancer.
In the days since her passing, visitors have transformed the area around the mural into a memorial, leaving behind flowers, candles, handwritten notes and personal mementos celebrating Parton’s life and legacy.
Among those paying tribute was Pam Bloink, who made a special trip to East Tennessee to honor one of her favorite entertainers. After visiting Parton’s statue in Sevier County, Bloink headed to downtown Knoxville to see the mural for herself.
“As soon as I left Sevierville, I just Googled my way over and found here,” Bloink said.
A Tribute Inspired by a Classic Song
Bloink brought a colorful pinwheel to leave at the memorial, inspired by one of Parton’s most beloved songs, “Coat of Many Colors.”
She said the tribute was meant to reflect the message of love, perseverance and family that has resonated with fans for decades.
“I remember with Dolly, singing that song, learning about her mother. You know, unfortunately, not having the money, but made her this coat of many colors,” Bloink said. “The pinwheel that I put down has many colors in it.”
The personal tribute is one of many items left at the mural as admirers from across the region continue stopping by to celebrate Parton’s impact on music, philanthropy and East Tennessee.
A Landmark With Its Own History
The Strong Alley mural has become one of Knoxville’s most recognizable pieces of public art.
The current mural is not the original version. After the artwork was vandalized in 2020, it was repainted and restored. Since then, it has remained a popular destination for both residents and visitors looking to take photos and celebrate Parton’s East Tennessee roots.
Now, the mural is serving a new purpose.
More Than a Work of Art
According to Shannon Herron of Dogwood Arts, the mural has evolved beyond a simple artistic installation and become a community gathering place.
“When a mural of a celebrity or icon like Dolly Parton is a part of a community, it becomes one of those memorial places,” Herron said. “It’s a place that people can come and remember her and pay their respects to her.”
Herron said public art often creates opportunities for people to connect with one another, share memories and celebrate common experiences. The outpouring of support surrounding the mural illustrates the deep connection many East Tennesseans feel with Parton and her legacy.
Remembering a Legacy of Hope
For Bloink, the memorial reflects what Parton represented to so many people throughout her life.
“We just need the love and the hope,” Bloink said.
As visitors continue leaving flowers, notes and keepsakes beneath the mural, the Strong Alley landmark has become a symbol not only of Dolly Parton’s extraordinary career but also of the warmth, compassion and generosity that made her a beloved figure far beyond the stage.
While her music touched audiences around the world, those gathering at the Knoxville mural are demonstrating that her connection to East Tennessee remains as strong as ever.
