Knoxville, TN (WOKI /WVLT) – The University of Tennessee has issued a campus safety warning after receiving multiple reports of sexual assaults and suspected drugging incidents at on-campus fraternity houses over the weekend.
According to university officials, four separate incidents were reported between Friday, Aug. 28, and Sunday, Aug. 30. Three of the reports involved alleged sexual assaults, while two included allegations of suspected drugging.
University officials said not all of the incidents have been reported to law enforcement. Because some of the allegations may involve ongoing investigations, the university released information based on the initial reports it received.
In its safety notice, UT emphasized that each situation is unique and that students affected by sexual assault should be supported regardless of how they choose to move forward.
“Every sexual assault incident is different for each individual, and the university supports and respects the decisions made by the students involved on how they wish to proceed,” the university said in its statement.
Officials also stressed that victims are never responsible for sexual misconduct committed against them.
Support Services Available
The university is encouraging any student affected by sexual assault, harassment, or related incidents to seek assistance through available campus and community resources.
Students may contact the University’s Office of Title IX for private support and guidance regarding reporting options and accommodations.
Confidential support is also available through the Sexual Assault Center of East Tennessee, as well as university counseling and mental health services.
Officials reminded students that help is available whether or not they choose to make a report to law enforcement.
Safety Guidance for Students
In response to the incidents, UT shared several recommendations aimed at improving personal safety during social events.
University officials encouraged students to:
- Use the buddy system when attending parties or gatherings.
- Have a transportation and safety plan before going out.
- Practice responsible drinking habits.
- Never leave drinks unattended.
- Be aware of their surroundings.
- Watch for friends who may need assistance.
UT also urged students to participate in its “Vols ACT” bystander intervention program, which encourages students to recognize potentially dangerous situations and safely intervene when possible.
Amnesty Policy Highlighted
University officials emphasized that students should never hesitate to seek medical or emergency help because of concerns about disciplinary consequences.
Under UT policy, amnesty protection is available for students who call for help and for impaired students involved in an incident, meaning formal disciplinary action related to alcohol use will generally not result from seeking emergency assistance.
Emergency Reporting
Students experiencing an emergency are encouraged to call 911 or contact the University of Tennessee Police Department at 865-974-3111.
The university also encourages students to download the “Safe at UT” mobile application, which allows users to quickly contact UTPD through emergency phone calls or text messages.
The university has not released additional details about the reported incidents as investigations continue.
