Knox County, TENN. (WVLT / WOKI) — A free, pop-up concert by the electronic music duo The Chainsmokers at the University of Tennessee was abruptly canceled Thursday night after a massive crowd surge caused barriers to collapse, sparking a chaotic stampede.
The event, which was scheduled to take place at Fraternity Park ahead of Saturday’s marquee football matchup between Tennessee and Texas, drew an overwhelming crowd estimated at nearly 10,000 people.
According to witnesses on the scene, security barriers collapsed almost immediately after gates opened, leading to a crowd crush where attendees were pushed and trampled on top of each other as fans surged toward the stage.
