Knox County, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Former Knox County Sheriff J.J. Jones and Assistant Chief Deputy David Amburn turned themselves in Monday at the Knox County Courthouse following indictments in a wide-ranging theft conspiracy case.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Jones and Amburn are among more than a dozen current and former Knox County Sheriff’s Office employees charged after a years-long investigation involving the department’s Narcotics Unit and Special Investigations Unit.
Investigators say the case centers on allegations that individuals used a KCSO-issued credit card for personal purchases between 2010 and 2018. Those purchases reportedly included electronics, hunting equipment and home renovation materials, totaling more than 300-thousand dollars. Authorities also allege that more than 30-thousand dollars in cash seized during undercover drug operations was used for personal expenses.
The TBI says agents also uncovered evidence that county-owned vehicles and equipment were used while on duty for personal projects, including home renovations, construction work and restoring classic cars.
Jones’ attorney, David Eldridge, said his client denies the charges.
He said, quote, “J.J. Jones did not receive any unlawful benefit from Knox County taxpayers… He is not guilty and looks forward to defending himself in court.”
The investigation began in 2019 and later involved the FBI. Evidence was presented to the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office in November 2025, leading to the indictments.
Those charged include current and former command staff, supervisors, and a civilian connected to the sheriff’s office.
Officials say the case underscores that no one is above the law.
