NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Gas prices in Tennessee are easing slightly, but drivers are still paying significantly more than they were just a month or a year ago.
According to AAA, the statewide average fell five cents over the past week to $4.12 per gallon. Despite the drop, prices remain 39 cents higher than a month ago and $1.37 higher than this time last year.
AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper says prices briefly surged to $4.21 last week before declining. She adds that drivers paid an average of $4.14 per gallon on Memorial Day — the highest holiday price in four years.
With summer travel now underway, demand for gasoline is expected to increase, which could keep prices elevated. Nationally, the average sits at $4.49 per gallon, while ongoing oil market concerns are also contributing to higher costs.
In Tennessee, Knoxville and Nashville currently have some of the highest metro averages at around $4.16 per gallon, while Chattanooga remains among the lowest at about $4.00.
