KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Despite recent rainfall across East Tennessee, drought conditions are continuing to impact the region.
Weather officials say parts of East Tennessee remain several inches below average rainfall, making 2026 the driest start to a year since 2007. The ongoing deficit has led to areas of severe to extreme drought.
According to NOAA data, it could take as much as nine inches of consistent rain over a month to eliminate the deficit. Experts say the type of rainfall matters, with steady, soaking rains more effective than scattered showers at restoring soil moisture and groundwater.
Recent rain has helped slightly reduce the deficit, but continued wet conditions will be critical as the region heads into summer.
