PITTMAN CENTER, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – The Pittman Center Volunteer Fire Department has announced plans to cease all emergency response operations effective October 31, 2026, unless a merger with Sevier County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) is established before that deadline.
In a statement posted on social media, the department’s Board of Advisors said the decision is driven by ongoing and severe staffing shortages that have left the agency unable to meet national safety standards.
According to the department, only nine firefighters currently remain on its roster, and just three are certified for interior firefighting operations. Those certifications are required for firefighters entering burning structures to conduct rescues and suppress fires.
Department leaders said current staffing levels do not meet the National Fire Protection Association’s “2-in/2-out” safety requirement, which generally requires at least four firefighters on scene before entering a hazardous environment.
Officials warned that continuing to operate under those conditions poses significant risks to firefighters and could jeopardize emergency services for residents and visitors in the Pittman Center area.
The department also expressed concerns about the community’s Insurance Services Office, or ISO, rating. A reduction in fire protection capabilities could lead to higher property insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses.
To avoid a disruption in service, the department has requested an immediate meeting with Sevier County leaders to begin formal discussions about a merger or absorption into Sevier County Fire and Rescue.
If an agreement is not reached and implemented by the October 31, 2026 deadline, the fire department says it will permanently suspend all emergency response services.
