Luke Bryan Announces New Album, “Born Here, Live Here, Die Here,” and New Tour

Luke Bryan announced he will release his seventh studio album, Born Here, Live Here, Die Here, on April 24. The new offering follows Luke’s 2017 No. 1 album, What Makes You Country.

In addition, Luke announced he will hit the road for his Proud to Be Right Here Tour, which kicks off on May 28 in Cincinnati. Additional stops include St. Louis, San Diego, Nashville, L.A. and more. Morgan Wallen, Runaway June and Caylee Hammack will serve as support.

“‘Proud to be right here’ is a phrase from my new album’s title track,” said Luke. “From the moment I first heard it, I loved that this song related so closely to how I grew up and how I still have so many ties to my hometown. It’s a connection I feel is so important in country music. I am truly so thankful to have the opportunity to make music for my fans and to look out into the crowds each night from stage and be proud of what we’ve created. And I’m excited to get on the road with these guest artists too. I’ve been watching what Morgan is building with his fans and it has been so fun to watch! I know with him, Caylee and Runaway June on this tour it’s going to be such a high energy night for everyone.”

Jimmy’s blog: Could Banks be reinstated to Tennessee team?

By Jimmy Hyams

Tennessee sophomore linebacker Jeremy Banks was dismissed from the team last fall after a video surfaced of him making inappropriate comments in the back of a police vehicle.

Since then, Banks has done well in class, saying he had a GPA of over 3.0.

After the dismissal by the previous football staff of Jauan Jennings in November 2017, UT coach Jeremy Pruitt and athletic director Phillip Fulmer reinstated Jennings and he performed at a high level the past two years.

Could UT also reinstate Banks?

During an interview on The Sports Animal WNML radio, Pruitt initially said he would only comment on the current players “because we have a whole lot of them that have done a lot of really good thinks over the past three or four months.’’

But then Pruitt talked about Banks.

“You know, Jeremy Banks is a guy I believe in and I think has a bright future,’’ Pruitt said. “Can he learn from his mistakes? Sure he can.

“You know, we’ve all make mistakes. Just in this day and time with social media, the mistake Jeremy made was something that will never go away. It’s something that hopefully he’ll learn from and he can use it as motivation and possibly impact other people so they don’t make the same mistakes he made.’’

Whether Banks gets a second chance at Tennessee remains to be seen.

Banks is enrolled at UT this semester.

No Country Music: Super Bowl Reveals Performers for National Anthem & Halftime Show

No Country Music: Super Bowl Reveals Performers for National Anthem & Halftime Show

Super Bowl LIV (54) on Feb. 2 will feature a halftime performance by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, with Demi Lovato (pictured) singing the national anthem during the pre-game festivities.

A country artist has not headlined the Super Bowl halftime show since Shania Twain pumped “Up!” the crowd in 2003 with Sting and No Doubt. That’s 17 years of twang-less performances for the more than 100 millions U.S. viewers that tune in each year.

If you go back to 1994, the halftime show—which was themed Rockin’ Country Sunday—featured Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt and the Judds.

If you want a really fun fact, Doug Kershaw was one of the performers during the 1990 Super Bowl. Doug had a handful of Top 20 hits on the country charts in the 1950s and ’60s with his brother Rusty as the duo Rusty & Doug.

Luke Bryan performed the national anthem at Super Bowl LI in 2017. In case you were wondering, past anthem performers with a country connection include Charley Pride (1974), Garth Brooks (1993), Faith Hill (2000), Dixie Chicks (2003) and Carrie Underwood (2010).

Georgia Runs Past Vols, 80-63

Georgia Runs Past Vols, 80-63

Credit: UT Athletics

ATHENS, Ga. – Two first-half runs and a hot-shooting touch from 3-point range in the opening half from Georgia were the difference on Wednesday night, as the Tennessee men’s basketball team fell, 80-63, in Athens.

Tennessee dropped to 10-6 and 2-2 in the SEC, while Georgia improved to 11-5 and 1-2 in conference action.

Senior Jordan Bowden paced the Vols in scoring, tallying 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field.

Freshman Josiah-Jordan James finished with 11 points, marking his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring output.

Junior Yves Pons was effective on the glass, pulling in a game-high eight rebounds while also adding eight points to the scoresheet.

The bright spot of the night for Tennessee was the debut of redshirt freshman transfer Uros Plavsic, who had sat out the previous 15 games after the NCAA repeatedly denied his waiver for immediate eligibility. The Serbian 7-footer finished with five points and three rebounds off the bench.

Georgia came out of the gates quickly, taking an early 8-3 lead. The Vols responded with a 9-0 run, during which four different players scored to give UT a 12-8 advantage with just under 14 minutes remaining in the half.

Georgia took the punch and came back with a 12-3 run of its own, spearheaded by freshman Anthony Edwards and graduate transfer Donnell Gresham Jr., who tallied six points apiece.

Holding a 20-15 lead, the Bulldogs extended their advantage with two 3-point buckets from Rayshaun Hammonds and layups from freshman Sahvir Wheeler and Edwards to take a 32-19 lead with under eight minutes to play in the half.

Georgia closed the half on a 13-5 run to take a 47-28 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, Georgia held steady. Despite multiple comeback efforts from the Vols, the Bulldogs never let their lead dip below 17 points for the remainder of the night.

The Streak Continues: Yves Pons recorded a block for the 16th consecutive game. Pons finished the night with two rejections, bringing his season total to 41 for an average of 2.6 blocks per game.

Up Next: The Vols return to the hardwood for a Saturday night road bout at in-state foe Vanderbilt. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Reveals 2020 Class, Including The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston & More

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Reveals 2020 Class, Including The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston & More

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2020: Nine Inch Nails, the Notorious B.I.G., Whitney Houston, Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers and T. Rex.

While no country artists were on the ballot this year, there’s certainly a country connection for a couple of the new electees.

  • Whitney Houston’s best-selling song, “I Will Always Love You,” was penned by Dolly Parton, who originally recorded the tune in 1974. Whitney’s 1992 rendition has been certified 8X Platinum by the RIAA for sales of 8 million units.
  • The Doobie Brothers’ 2014 album, Southbound, featured the Doobies teaming with some of country’s top talent for one-offs, including Blake Shelton (“Listen to the Music”), Brad Paisley (Rockin’ Down the Highway”), Toby Keith (Long Train Runnin’) and Zac Brown Band (“Black Water”).

Pat Benatar, Dave Matthews Band, Judas Priest, Kraftwerk, MC5, Motörhead, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren, Soundgarden, and Thin Lizzy were among the nominees that didn’t receive enough votes for election this year. Ballots were cast by an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, including current inductees, historians and members of the music industry.

The induction ceremony will air live on HBO from Cleveland’s Public Hall on May 2.

Jimmy’s blog: Vols need better QB play to take next step

Jimmy’s blog: Vols need better QB play to take next step

By Jimmy Hyams

Tennessee rose from the ashes of a 1-4 start to win the Gator Bowl and finish 8-5.

Considering the player development and the young talent on the Vols’ roster, the future certainly looks bright.

The Vols should be strong at running back, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and in the secondary. The concerns: wide receiver and tight end.

Then the biggest concern: quarterback.

Rising senior Jarrett Guarantano had some special moments this past season. He threw for over 400 yards against Missouri. He came off the bench to help UT beat Mississippi State, South Carolina and Kentucky. He also played well the last two drives against Indiana.

But he also had some subpar moments. He was up and down on the field, and in and out of the lineup. He was a starter, then got benched, then played well in relief, then started again, but was benched again for a series in the bowl game.

For Tennessee to take the next step under coach Jeremy Pruitt, the Vols have to get better quarterback play. At least six SEC teams were better at quarterback than Tennessee.

Guarantano was too inconsistent to bet he’s the guy that can get the Vols to the next level.

Will he find that consistency in his fifth season?

Will he jive with offensive coordinator Jim Chaney?

Will he get beat out in the spring by a freshman quarterback or someone else?

Will he return to UT if he loses the job in the spring?

I don’t know the answers to those questions.

But I do know UT better get better quarterback play or winning more than eight games next year is a pipe dream.

Tennessee was one of eight SEC teams to win at least eight games this past season – and the Vols might have the biggest question mark in 2020 of those eight teams, if Jamie Newman plays as well at Georgia as he did at Wake Forest.

Guarantano completed less than 60% of his passes for 2,158 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Brian Maurer, who made five starts (if you don’t count Jauan Jennings starting against South Carolina in the wildcat), hit just 46.7% of his passes for 541 yards with two scores and five interceptions. He’s more mobile than Guarantano, but has a tendency to throw into double coverage.

As a team Tennessee threw for 2,878 yards with 19 TDs, 13 picks, and a 132.9 rating – sixth in the SEC. UT’s 19 TD passes tied for seventh.

Tagvoialoa had the best pass efficiency rating among SEC quarterbacks but he didn’t quality nationally because he played in just nine games.

Burrow officially led the nation. Florida’s Kyle Trask was 15th, Guarantano 42nd, Georgia’s Jake Fromm 51st and Missouri’s Kelly Bryant 54th.

If you don’t think quarterback play is important, look at the offensive drop-off from 2018 to 2019 at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Missouri.

And look at the surge by LSU with a Heisman Trophy winner pulling the trigger.

Here’s a look at the quarterback production of the other seven SEC teams that won at least eight games in the 2019 season.

Alabama:

Tua Tagovailoa completed 180 of 252 (71.4%) for 2,840 yards with 33 touchdowns and only three interceptions. His rating: 206.9, which ranked among the nation’s top five.

Mac Jones was 97 of 141 (68.8%) for 1,503 yards with 14 TDs, three picks and a 186.8 rating. He also helped Bama score 45 points in a loss to Auburn. Alabama’s team total: 4,449 yards, 49 touchdowns, six picks.

Auburn

Bo Nix  was 217 of 377 (57.6%) for 2,542 yards, 16 TDs, six 6 picks. Rating: 125.0. He also rushed for 313 yards and seven scores. Auburn’s team total: 2,697 yards, 20 TDs, six picks, 128.3 rating.

Florida

Kyle Trask was 237 of 354 (66.9%) for 2,941 yards, 25 TDs, seven picks. Rating: 156.1. Team totals: 3,910 yards, 33 TDs, 10 picks. 157.2 rating.

 Georgia

Jake Fromm was 234 of 385 (60.8%) for 2,860 yards, 24 TDs, five picks, 141.2 rating. Team totals: 3,122 yards, 26 TDs, six picks, 142.4 rating.

 Kentucky

Lynn Bowden was 35-74 (47.3%) for 403 yards, three TDs, three picks, 98.3 rating. But Bowden ran an option attack when he took over and set an SEC QB rushing record with 1,468 yards and 13 TDs. Team totals passing: 1,478 yards, nine TDs, eight picks, 103.4 rating.

 LSU

Joe Burrow was 402 of 527 (77.6%) for 5,771 yards, 60 TDs, six picks, 202.0 rating. He also ran for five touchdowns. Team totals: 6,024 yards, 61 TDs, seven picks. As a junior, Burrow was 219 of 379 for 2,984 yards passing, 399 rushing, 16 TD passes, five picks.

 Texas A&M

Kellen Mond was 258 of 419 (61.6%) for 2,897 yards, 20 TDs, nine picks, 131.1 rating. He also rushed for 500 yards and eight scores. Team totals: 3,060 yards, 22 TDs, 10 picks, 128.9 rating.
