All-Female Festival to Feature Maren Morris, Margo Price, Brandi Carlile, Indigo Girls & More

Brandi Carlile has curated an all-female destination concert vacation in Riviera Maya, Mexico, on Jan. 30–Feb. 3.

Dubbed Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend, the festival features multiple shows by Brandi as well as performances by Maren Morris, Indigo Girls, Margo Price, Patty Griffin, Lucius, KT Tunstall, The Secret Sisters and Ruby Amanfu.

“Mainstream festivals in the U.S. habitually exclude women as headline artists equal to men,” says Brandi. “I was brought up by Lilith Fair to believe that men and women enjoy live music equally and that women can not only headline a festival—they can be a festival. I’m proud to announce that our festival has an all-female-fronted lineup. I would absolutely love to see a ton of men there supporting women in rock and roll, I want to see mothers with children, single people, LGBTQ brothers and sisters letting it all go for a weekend together in harmony—with bottomless tequila on hand to assist.”

Girls Just Wanna Weekend will be held at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, an all-inclusive resort located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Guests can choose from a variety of packages, which are available for pre-sale on July 31 and public sale on Aug. 1.

Jimmy’s blog: Pruitt poised, confident at first SEC media days

Jimmy’s blog: Pruitt poised, confident at first SEC media days

By Jimmy Hyams

ATLANTA — Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt was composed, confident and humorous – yes, humorous – as he bounced from station to station during his first SEC football media days.

With Tennessee taking center stage Wednesday, Pruitt visited with local and national media in private, hit radio row, the print room and the electronic media area, delivering the same message: He’s thrilled to be Tennessee’s head coach.

Pruitt bragged about his staff and the three players he brought to media days – Eli Wolf, Marquez Callaway and Kyle Phillips. He said offensive lineman Trey Smith, who missed the spring with an undisclosed illness, will be back this fall.

When Smith expressed concern about missing reps in the spring, Pruitt reassured him: “I promise you, Trey, you’ll be fine.’’

Pruitt even handled a tough question with poise.

During an interview with a Nashville station Tuesday, former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said he didn’t think Pruitt had the personality to be a head coach and that he didn’t show proper respect to his boss at Georgia, then-head coach Mark Richt.

Asked about those comments, Pruitt praised Murray as a player and competitor, and told the story of his dad, Dale, a high school coach, saying fans have a right to their opinion and you can’t worry about what others say.

“I’ll worry about things I can control,’’ Pruitt said.

Pruitt also added: “Fifteen years ago, I was a kindergarten teacher. Now I’m the head coach at Tennessee. You don’t do that without knowing how to treat people.’’

Some of Pruitt’s media day highlights:

He said eight of the 32 players taken in the first round of the most recent NFL draft were recruited, coached or developed by members of his UT staff. He said eight off the 11 members of his staff started out in high school. And his staff has been a part of 13 national championships.

He said the “Power of the T’’ allows him to recruit nationwide.

He said 10 seniors on the team already have their degree and that by Christmas, 22 will have degrees.

He said defensive end Kyle Phillips has gained from 260 pounds to 275 or 280 and “has done everything asked of him.’

He said when he first met Eli Wolf, he thought he was a trainer or manager. When Wolf told Pruitt he was a tight end, Pruitt asked if Wolf had blocked an SEC defensive end. Wolf said no, but he ran a 4.5 in the 40, according to Pruitt. Wolf has gained about 20 pounds since before spring ball.

Pruitt said 12 players didn’t compete in the spring due to injury, 15 newcomers arrived in the summer and three grad transfers have signed. Thus, Pruitt said, 30 players on the roster didn’t compete in the spring. He said those additions will add competition at most every position.

Pruitt was asked why UT football has struggled in the past 10 years, not winning the East Division since 2007 and recording just one winning record in SEC play in a decade. “I can only try to assess the last six months,’’ Pruitt said. He said from the administration to boosters to the fan base, “we’re all running in the same direction as fast as we can.’’

Pruitt was asked about the importance of in-state recruiting. “It’s important to get the right players that fit,’’ he said, noting UT has a national brand. He said he wants recruits with character who can handle adversity and have a positive effect on teammates.

Pruitt was asked about calling out fans who didn’t attend the spring game. “We have phenomenal fans, phenomenal,’’ he said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to give back to the fan base. Our goal is to put a football team on the field they can be proud of.’’

Pruitt said he wants four to six running backs due to the attrition of the position. He mentioned the top four – Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan, Jeremy Banks and Mondre London – along with Trey Coleman and converted tight end Princeton Fant.

Asked why he is the perfect fit for Tennessee, Pruitt said: “I don’t know that I was the perfect fit.’’ But he said if he knew he’d become a head coach, he couldn’t have picked a better athletic director than Phillip Fulmer. “Everything that made Tennessee great over the years, he knows why. When they were not great, he knows why.’’

Asked if he would be more like Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher or Mark Richt, Pruitt said none. He talked about going from a P.E. coach 15 years ago to an SEC head coach. “I didn’t get here by trying to be someone else.’’

He said he would adopt Saban’s philosophy of one voice and wouldn’t let his assistants talk to the media. “They’ll appreciate that,’’ he said.

Parker Chosen as WNBA All-Star Captain

NEW YORK — Lady Vol great Candace Parker is headed to her fifth WNBA All-Star Game, and this time she will do so as a team captain.

Parker is one of only three players in WNBA history to earn regular-season MVP, Finals MVP and All-Star Game MVP honors, joining Maya Moore and Lisa Leslie.

The WNBA revealed the list of 22 players selected by fans, WNBA players and head coaches, and media for Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018.  Parker, a forward/center for the Los Angeles Sparks, and Washington Mystics forward/guard Elena Delle Donne will serve as team captains and draft the rosters for the 15th WNBA All-Star Game.

The contest will take place on Saturday, July 28, at Target Center in Minneapolis. ABC will televise the game between Team Parker and Team Delle Donne live at 3:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. CT).

Moore, a four-time WNBA champion with the Minnesota Lynx, and Delle Donne earned spots as team captains after receiving the highest vote totals regardless of conference. Moore, however, informed the WNBA that she is unable to perform her captaincy duties at this time. She has been excused from those responsibilities but will remain a part of the All-Star Game. Parker was selected by WNBA President Lisa Borders to replace Moore as a team captain due to finishing third in the fan voting behind Moore and Delle Donne.

Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird and Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi headline the All-Star player pool.  Bird was named an All-Star for the 11th time, breaking a tie with LVFL Tamika Catchings for the most selections in WNBA history. Taurasi, the 2009 WNBA MVP, earned her ninth All-Star selection, tied for the third most with Tina Thompson. She is one of seven WNBA MVPs to be chosen for Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018, joining Moore (2014), Delle Donne (2015), Parker (2008, 2013), New York Liberty center Tina Charles (2012), Lynx center Sylvia Fowles (2017) and Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike (2016).

The All-Stars were announced Tuesday night on ESPN’s SportsCenter.  Under the new All-Star Game format that replaces the traditional matchup between conferences, Delle Donne and Parker will select their respective teams from the pool of remaining All-Stars to form two 11-player rosters.  Delle Donne will make the first pick and Parker will have the second pick.  The two captains will then alternate picks until all players have been selected.

The rosters for Team Delle Donne and Team Parker will be revealed on Thursday, July 19 at the start of ESPN2’s telecast of a game between Washington and the Dallas Wings (8 p.m. ET tip-off). On Friday, July 27, the All-Star team captains and head coaches will meet to determine the starting lineups. The starters will be revealed that night on ESPN2 (7 p.m. ET) during a live telecast of the WNBA All-Star Welcome Reception in Minnesota. Seattle head coach Dan Hughes will lead Team Delle Donne, while Phoenix head coach Sandy Brondello will guide Team Parker.

For the first time, All-Stars were selected without regard for conference affiliation. Fans accounted for 40 percent of the vote, while current players, current head coaches and a media panel accounted for 20 percent each. Players were not allowed to vote for their teammates. Head coaches could not vote for players on their own team.

Moore was the leading vote-getter among fans (47,620) in WNBA All-Star Voting 2018 presented by Verizon. She was followed by Delle Donne (42,171), Parker (38,575), Bird (37,098) and Taurasi (35,687). Fans cast 44 percent more votes than they did last year (873,437 vs. 604,680).

After all votes were tallied, players were ranked by position (guard and front court) within each voting group – fan votes, player votes, coach votes and media votes.  Each player’s score was calculated by averaging her weighted rank applied to the respective voting groups.  The nine guards and 13 front court players with the best scores were named to compete in Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018.

Jimmy’s blog: SEC head coaches praise former UT assistants

Jimmy’s blog: SEC head coaches praise former UT assistants

By Jimmy Hyams

Jimbo Fisher knows what it takes to win a national championship.

He was on the LSU staff that won a title in 2003. He was at Auburn when the Tigers opened the 1993 season 11-0 but wasn’t eligible due to NCAA sanctions. He was Florida State’s head coach when the Seminoles took home the crystal ball in 2013.

So Texas A&M’s new coach knows what great football looks like.

He also knows what great coaching looks like and that’s one reason he’s confident Randy Sanders, his former offensive coordinator at FSU, will do well as head coach at East Tennessee State University.

“I think he’ll do excellent,’’ Fisher told WNML radio recently. “One, he’s very knowledgeable. He knows his players very well. He’s a hard worker. He gets the big picture. I think he’ll do an outstanding job.’’

Sanders, a former Tennessee quarterback and long-time assistant, is from Morristown, 66 miles from Johnson City. Fisher said it’s an advantage for Sanders to know the East Tennessee area.

“He’s a good recruiter and he relates to people well,’’ Fisher said.

Fisher said Sanders did a “great job for me.’’

How so?

“He took a lot of pressure off me when I wasn’t in the room,’’ Fisher said. “I knew the room was being run right as far as the plan we wanted. We had similar philosophies in a lot of things. He knows the run game. He knows the pass game.

“He was very authoritative when he had to be. He was everything you wanted an assistant coach to be.’’

Sanders isn’t the only former UT assistant who drew praise from another SEC head coach.

Chad Morris, hired from SMU to lead the Arkansas program, hired two former UT aides: defensive coordinator John Chavis and defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell.

Chavis is a veteran who has served 23 years as an SEC defensive coordinator—at Tennessee, LSU and Texas A&M.

Morris said he had one call to make when hired and that was to Chavis.

“He’s rejuvenated, he’s excited, he’s bouncing around,’’ Morris said.

Morris thinks Chavis likes the idea of joining a program at the same time as the new head coach, rather joining a coach who has been at a program several years.

“And I believe he sees the impact he has on young coaches we well,’’ Morris said. “We’ve got some young guys on our staff and his wisdom, his knowledge and his ability to learn will help.’’

Morris also said his wide open offense has Chavis “really excited’’ to help him grow and evolve as a coach.

Morris also had high praise for Caldwell.

“Steve is a fantastic recruiter,’’ Morris said, “and very well thought of in the state of Arkansas.’’

Morris said he was thrilled to put Chavis and Caldwell (an Arkansas State graduate) together again, as they were for years at Tennessee.

“As a matter of fact, when I started talking to Chief (Chavis) on hiring him, he asked,’ `Hey, look, I want Steve Caldwell,’’’ Morris said.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Steve. He absolutely fits what we’re about.’’

Auburn’s defensive coordinator is Kevin Steele, a former Tennessee player and assistant. A former head coach at Baylor, Steele more recently has been a defensive coordinator at LSU, Alabama and Clemson. He’s had mixed results, but his first year at Auburn, he did a terrific job as the Tigers ranked in the top five in the SEC in scoring defense, run defense, pass defense and total defense.

Auburn held high-powered Clemson, Missouri and Alabama to 14 points each and Georgia to 17.

“Kevin, he’s a professional,’’ said Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. “He’s a player’s coach. He’s so good with the relationship side and he is very smart and has done a super job for us.

“And he fits. He fits what I’m looking for as a coach. He’s a great example to our players. He’s what a great dad looks like. He’s what a great husband looks like. He’s a great person. He’s a great coach.’’

From Fan to Collaborator to Tour Mate, Maren Morris Is Ready for “Really Fun Tour” With Niall Horan

From Fan to Collaborator to Tour Mate, Maren Morris Is Ready for “Really Fun Tour” With Niall Horan

Maren Morris is gearing up to join the North American leg of Niall Horan’s Flicker World Tour, which kicks off on July 18 in Woodlands, Texas, and makes more than 30 stops in the U.S. and Canada through September.

Maren and Niall, a former member of pop troupe One Direction, have already played several tour dates abroad, including stops in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Brazil and more. The tandem has been on the friendship fast-track since collaborating together on “Seeing Blind,” which was featured on Niall’s 2017 debut solo album, Flicker. The pair also performed “Seeing Blind” at the CMA Music Awards in November 2017.

As Maren told Kix Brooks of American Country Countdown, working with the pop star has been a “great fit.”

“I am a [fan of his],” says Maren to Kix. “I’ve grown up listening to everything, so One Direction, even though I think the fan-base is younger than me, I remember hearing ‘Steal My Girl’ and I was like, ‘This is such a great pop song.’ When [the members of One Direction] all started doing their own solo projects, I noticed Niall was always the one with the guitar. I loved his first single that he put out and found out that he was a songwriter and he wrote a lot of those songs for the band . . . Once he reached out to me to be on ‘Seeing Blind,’ I listened to it and it had this almost country feel to it. It was very stompy, roosty, so it just felt like a great fit . . . I think it’s going to be a really fun tour.”

Florida Georgia Line & Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to Be” Earns Nomination for Best Collaboration at MTV Video Music Awards

Florida Georgia Line & Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to Be” Earns Nomination for Best Collaboration at MTV Video Music Awards

Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line earned a 2018 MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Best Collaboration for their joint effort with Bebe Rexha on “Meant to Be.”

FGL and Bebe face off against five other collaborative nominees, including Bruno Mars/Cardi B (“Finesse”), The Carters (“APES**T”), Jennifer Lopez/DJ Khaled/Cardi B (“Dinero”), Logic/Alessia Cara/Khalid (“1-800-273-8255”) and N.E.R.D/Rihanna (“Lemon”). Voting is now open. The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards take place on Aug. 20 in New York City.

“Meant to Be,” which as was co-penned by Bebe Rexha, Josh Miller, David Garcia and FGL’s Tyler Hubbard, ascended to the top of both the Billboard Country Airplay chart and the Mediabase chart in April.

“From day one, this song was just meant to be,” says Tyler. “Bebe jumped in on a canceled writing session last minute and now it’s going down in history.”

The tune has also resided atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for 33 weeks, which is the second longest reign in the 59-year history of the chart, behind only Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” (34 weeks).

“It’s been nothing but good vibes to see it take off and inspire,” says Brian. “Its message is a positive one and [that’s] why I think it’s connecting with those who hear it. We can’t thank country radio enough for all of the support.”

In the only other country-related nominee from the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, “Say Something” by Justin Timberlake featuring Chris Stapleton earned a Best Direction (Arturo Perez Jr) nomination.
