Watch Rory Feek’s Profile on “CBS Sunday Morning” as He Talks About 3 Daughters: Hope’s Coming Out, Heidi’s Atheism, Indiana’s Down Syndrome

It’s been more than two years since Rory Feek lost his wife—and Joey+Rory duo partner—Joey Martin Feek to cancer in March 2016.

Since that time, Rory has had to adjust to being a single father to their daughter, Indiana, 4, who was born with Down syndrome, as well as his daughters—Hope, 29, and Heidi, 31—from his previous marriage. Rory has also had to adjust to performing onstage without his longtime partner.

CBS Sunday Morning’s Anthony Mason sat down with Rory to talk about the two years since Joey’s death, including his reaction to finding out Hope is gay and Heidi is an atheist.

Proud Papas Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban & Charles Kelley Reflect on Being Dads in Honor of Father’s Day

Proud Papas Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban & Charles Kelley Reflect on Being Dads in Honor of Father’s Day

Proud papas Darius Rucker, Keith Urban, Charles Kelley and Luke Bryan reflected on being dads in honor of Father’s Day on June 17.

Darius Rucker: daughters Caroline and Dani, son Jack

“I think if you asked my kids what kind of dad I was they would probably say . . . Dani would say that I was a fun dad. My little daughter would say that I was a fun dad. She thinks I’m a lot of fun. I think if you caught them at the right moment, they would say I was mean [laughs] because when I’m home, I’m not afraid to discipline them. I’m all fun until it’s not fun anymore and then daddy’s not the fun guy. I think that they’d say that I was a fun dad, I’m a loving dad and I think they would say that. I’m gone so much that when I’m home, I just shower love upon my kids. I say ‘I love you’ probably 50 times a day. We hug, we kiss all the time. I’m always wanting them to know how much I love them. So I’d hope they’d say that I was a loving dad.”

Keith Urban: daughters Sunday and Faith

“The first thing is probably just having someone call you dad. I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh! I’m her dad! That’s amazing.’ That’s probably the first thing to me. I don’t know, I mean, the different personalities that our two daughters have, that’s amazing. It’s such a long list I think. I think for the people that haven’t had kids, which I hadn’t for a long, long time. I didn’t have kids until later on, and being around it is not the same as having them, you know? I realize that it’s not something that can be explained until you actually sort of have it, so I’m glad I got to experience that.”

Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum: son Ward

“Gosh! I mean, being a father, it really puts a lot of things into perspective about making sure you do shut off that side of your brain, that work side of your brain and focus on what matters most. I think in the past, I think I’ve always had it in the back of the mind—work, and once you have a kid, you see something that you love more than yourself. I don’t know. It just really is making me realize how fast time moves and to really and try to enjoy these little moments with my little son and my wife, Cassie.”

Luke Bryan, sons Bo and Tate, nephew Til

“Last year, my Father’s Day was—Caroline was perfect in asking me what I wanted for Father’s Day—and I said I want to go camping with the boys on a little trout stream. So, I went and borrowed, I knew a buddy who had a pull-behind trailer, you know, camper. We get the camper hooked up, get to the campsite, it’s 98 degrees. I had loaded a lawn mower in the back of my truck. By the time I got done mowing an acre of four-foot tall grass for the campsite, mosquitoes, couldn’t get the camper—you know, the camper never works like you want it to. It may just be a day around the pool at the Bryan house [this year]. I hadn’t really put my mind together for what I want for Father’s Day, but I won’t be mowing an acre of grass for the RV moment.”

Vol. 1: “Women Want to Hear Women” With Elaina Smith

Vol. 1: “Women Want to Hear Women” With Elaina Smith

Nash Nights Live co-host Elaina Smith has teamed with Nash Country Daily for an ongoing conversation that we want you to be a part of.

“Women don’t want to hear women.”

It’s a phrase that you may be familiar with in 2018. It’s something that has been said in country music for years. I can’t tell you how many female artists have told me they’ve heard this from bosses, program directors and industry friends. It’s a phrase I have heard in reference to female radio personalities, like myself. In fact, it’s been said to my face on multiple occasions.

I want to reclaim this narrative and prove that women do want to hear women. I want to be a part of moving this conversation forward . . . with YOU!

I want to highlight strong, talented female artists and give them the attention and love they deserve. Female artists have an underrepresented voice in our industry—their messages and representations are important to me, and hopefully you.

So here’s the deal: I’ll be checking in regularly with Nash Country Daily to highlight female country artists through my interviews, podcasts, playlists and opinion pieces. I want to share the reasons I love these artists and help you “discover” them.

This is going to be a group effort, people. Tweet @ElainaDSmith or @NASHCntryDaily to let us know who we should highlight and what questions you want answered. Make sure to use the hashtag: #WomenWantToHearWomen.

To get the conversation kicked off, I’ve curated my first “Women Want to Hear Women” playlist, which is packed with 14 powerful women: Cam, Ashley McBryde, Clare Dunn, Abby Anderson, Maren Morris, Cassadee Pope, Kacey Musgraves, Stephanie Quayle, RaeLynn, Leah Turner, Lindsay Ell, Caitlyn Smith, Rachel Wammack and Kassi Ashton.

Listen to Dan + Shay’s Soaring New Song, “Keeping Score,” Featuring Kelly Clarkson

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay are gearing up for the June 22 release of their new self-titled album by dropping a new tune, “Keeping Score,” which features vocals from Kelly Clarkson.

Penned by Dan, Jordan Reynolds and Laura Veltz, “Keeping Score” is the fifth track the duo has released from the upcoming album, including Top 5 lead single, “Tequila,” and wedding ode, “Speechless”

“It is such an honor for us to sing this duet with Kelly,” said Dan. “Not only is she one of the most incredible vocalists of our generation, she is one of the most genuine, kind-hearted people we have ever met. We’re glad this song resonated with her as much as it did with us.”

The duo is currently on the road as part of Rascal Flatts’ Back to Us Tour.

Rory Feek Opens Up About Performing Solo, Daughter Coming Out & More on “CBS Sunday Morning”

Rory Feek Opens Up About Performing Solo, Daughter Coming Out & More on “CBS Sunday Morning”

It’s been more than two years since Rory Feek lost his wife—and Joey+Rory duo partner—Joey Martin Feek to cancer in March 2016.

Since that time, Rory has had to adjust to being a single father to their daughter, Indiana, 4, who was born with Down syndrome, as well as his daughters—Hopie, 29, and Heidi, 31—from his previous marriage. Rory has also had to adjust to performing onstage without his longtime partner.

CBS Sunday Morning’s Anthony Mason sat down with Rory to talk about the two years since Joey’s death, including his reaction to finding out Hopie was gay.

Below are a few excerpts from the interview that will air on June 17 at 9 a.m. CT on CBS.

  • “I feel just as married and just as in love [since Joey’s death]. And I feel like she’s just as much a part of our life as she was.”
  • “It felt surreal and strange [performing solo], a little wrong in some ways because I had kinda decided I wouldn’t. But, on the other side, it felt strangely similar.”
  • “I said, ‘Just tell me, Hopie,’ And she went on to tell me that her friend Wendy was more than her friend, that Wendy and her had been dating for almost a year. And that she was in love . . . She’s asking me, ‘Are you still going to love me?’ And my first reaction, honestly, was I don’t think so . . . Because my conservative Christian faith that saved me—the first reaction is that challenges that immensely. Am I supposed to shun my child now and say, ‘No, you can’t be in my life until you come around to thinking like I’m thinking’? . . . The only thing I try to keep in mind is it’s her life, it’s her choice, it’s her faith and my job is to love her even when it’s hard . . . Yes, [I accept her].”

Walker Hayes Pays It Forward With “Be a Craig Fund”

Walker Hayes Pays It Forward With “Be a Craig Fund”

Walker Hayes followed up his Top 10 single “You Broke Up With Me” by releasing “Craig,” a tune that pays homage to a man who helped Walker through a trying time in his life as he and wife Laney struggled to make ends meet for their six children.

“Craig and his family basically adopted Laney and I and our kids into their family and into their lives,” says Craig to Nash Country Daily. “And then he shows up one night after things had gotten so bad—we were on the verge of maybe losing our house and financially things were getting uncomfortable with me chasing my dream. He shows up out of the blue with his own minivan out of his garage with the title and keys and just hands it to me. I didn’t want to need help, but I did need it.”

Craig’s act of kindness allowed Walker to have a vehicle with enough seatbelts for the whole family.

To pay forward Craig’s generosity, Walker has established the Be a Craig Fund, which hopes to not only shine a light on those in need but also those who are willing to step up to help.

“I wanna be a ‘Craig,’” says Walker. “I want to be more selfless and look outward. I want to give back and this fund allows us to do so, together.”

Fans can submit a story of someone in need, buy a “Be a Craig” t-shirt or make a simple donation. Several of the stories submitted will be highlighted and profits from donations and t-shirt sales will be used to aide those special people just looking for a little help.

DJ Burns on UT “It’s a great place where I can potentially get to the next level”

DJ Burns on UT “It’s a great place where I can potentially get to the next level”

Heralded true freshman forward DJ Burns (Rock Hill, SC) enrolled at UT last week. Burns (6’8) was made available to Knoxville media today for the first time since his arrival on Rocky Top.

Here’s what Rick Barnes said about Burns:

“We targeted D.J. three years ago because he fits our culture on and off the court. His mom and dad have prepared him well, and we believe he’s got a really bright future. D.J. allows us to play through the high or low post. He’s a good passer, he can make perimeter shots and he’s got excellent footwork. With his attitude and approach, he’ll grow quickly and tremendously within our player development program. We’re excited about D.J. He’s a great addition for us.”

Asked what he feels like he can bring to the team right away, Burns said “A will to win.”

Burns was asked to describe his game:

“A post player that can stretch out. Post, back-to-the-basket, a lot of moves there. I’m also working on extending my game beyond the three-point line as well.”

Lauren Alaina, Sam Hunt, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church & More Share Heartfelt Memories of Their Dads for Father’s Day

Lauren Alaina, Sam Hunt, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church & More Share Heartfelt Memories of Their Dads for Father’s Day

From “That’s My Job” and “A Boy Named Sue” to “Drive (For Daddy Gene)” and “Love Without End, Amen,” country artists have a long tradition of connecting with their dads in song.

In honor of Father’s Day on June 17, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Kip Moore, Sam Hunt, Lauren Alaina, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood weighed in on the impact their fathers had on them.

Eric Church

“My dad is a—I’m trying to find the right words to describe him. My dad is a great guy, honest guy, very call it like he sees it, which is where I get a lot of that. No BS. I’m gonna tell you how I feel whether you like it or not. I’m that guy, I’m me . . . My dad’s that way, so I get a lot of that from him. There’s also an honesty and an integrity that my dad carries himself with that I’ve always admired.”

Dierks Bentley

“My dad was my biggest influence in country music because my dad loved country radio. So, we always drove around listening to country radio and George Strait, Hank Williams and Randy Travis and all these guys. Without him, I wouldn’t be doing this, that’s for sure.”

Kip Moore

“He would just play all those classic records—Little River Band, Jackson Browne, Springsteen, Seger, Willie Nelson, Kristofferson, Sam Cook—like classic music. He’d be singing the songs and telling us why it was such good music. And I looked up to him so much, that’s the music I gravitated towards and that’s what I continue to listen to. Whenever I think about those old fishing trips, that’s what I think about is on the way down there, him singing those songs and all of us singing ’em.”

Sam Hunt

“I’m obviously biased about my parents, but I’ve been around a lot of great men of integrity, but he is by far the best man that I know. He’s just taught me so much about being a man, doing the right thing, knowing the difference between right and wrong. And even though I don’t always follow his lead, I definitely know better because of him, and that means a whole lot to me. I was just really fortunate to have him as a dad, and he’s great.”

Lauren Alaina

“Oh my gosh. My dad’s the best. I’m really proud of my daddy. “October 6th will be his five-year anniversary of being sober. So that’s a big one for us. And it’s been really amazing the last few years with his recovery. Our relationship was a little rocky before he went into rehab and now we talk every single day. And he is my daddy and I’m so proud of him. He’s the hardest worker I know, and that’s why I work so hard because I grew up watching him do it. I’m proud of him and he moved to Alabama for work and he loves it, and he’s like 30 minutes from the beach. So, I’m trying to hit that beach up every minute I can. But I’m really proud of him, and he’s a great dad and he always has been.”

Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum

“I definitely got my Type-A personality from my dad. He’s the same way, but one thing I’m so appreciative of—especially from a father-daughter relationship—my dad always, always talked to me, even when I didn’t want to talk to him. He would force me to communicate and talk through things, and not always the easy stuff, which is such a rare quality in a man, truthfully. And so, I am very, very thankful for that. I think it helped me find the right husband for me, and I also know that it will help me be that much of a better communicator to my children.” —Hillary Scott

“My dad was a really hard worker growing up and was always great, however hard he worked, he’d always make important time for family, important time to be home for dinner and be there for a lot of special moments for us growing up. For all the money he would make, he would always give a portion of it back to charity or to the church, and so that was always important for me to watch. We had a great relationship growing up. My dad plays guitar, he’s very musical. I learned how to play acoustic guitar with him playing ‘Day Tripper’ by the Beatles and all these old songs we’d play together when he’d show me how to play these James Taylor songs and things like that. So, definitely want to pass along music, of course, to my children, as well, like that.” —Dave Haywood
