Proposed Knox County Budget Prioritizes Infrastructure and School Investments

Proposed Knox County Budget Prioritizes Infrastructure and School Investments

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs Monday unveiled his proposed spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year.

The budget fully funds the school system’s request, covers upgrades in the Sheriff’s Office, and improves roads and parks and does not call for a property tax increase.

Mayor Jacobs says we have not raised taxes in Knox County in almost 25 years, and he does not intend to do so now.

“All of us must live within our means and that includes government. I said a long time ago, I would never raise your property taxes and I meant it” said Mayor Jacobs after his budget address and State of the County speech.

The total proposed budget, which must be approved by the Knox County Board of Commissioners by June 30, stands at a little more than $1.1 billion and is roughly 3 percent higher than the current year, but nearly two-thirds of the spending – about $683.7 million – is dedicated to funding Knox County’s public schools.

“That is almost $23 million dollars more than their current budget, and I am recommending that we fund the request in its entirety,” Mayor Jacobs said.

That means starting teachers with a bachelor’s degree will make $47,000 dollars a year and the starting pay for those with a master’s degree will be almost $51,000 dollars. And, by 2026, all our starting teachers will meet state requirements by earning at least $50,000 dollars annually.

The county is expected to hold a public hearing on the proposal on May 13 at 3:30 p.m.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – It took extra innings, but the third-ranked Lady Vols triumphed over No. 24 Kentucky, 8-7, on Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium as both teams wrapped up the regular season.

Tennessee (40-9, 19-5 SEC) won a back-and-forth senior day contest thanks to a Taylor Pannell walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The long ball was Pannell’s seventh of the season.

The scoring onslaught began early as Kiki Milloy opened the game with her 12th home run of the season. Pannell – who finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs – drove in UT’s second run later in the first with an RBI single.

Kentucky (30-21, 8-16 SEC) bounced back in the second as Peyton Plotts hit a two-run home run to center.

Tennessee retook the lead with a pair of runs in the second as McKenna Gibson knocked in an RBI double followed by a Rylie West sacrifice fly.

An error in the fourth and another Pannell RBI single plated two runs before Destiny Rodriguez drove in a third run on a ground out to second – extending the Lady Vols’ lead to 7-2.

The Wildcats clawed back in the fifth with a pair of two-run home runs to cut their deficit to one before scoring one run in the sixth on a wild pitch to tie the game at 7-7.

That set the stage for Pannell to club her walk-off home run in the home half of the eighth inning – sending Tennessee home with the 8-7 victory.

Senior Ryleigh White got the start on senior day, tossing 1.1 innings. She allowed two runs on two hits with a walk. She was relieved in the second by Payton Gottshall who pitched 3.1 frames. The graduate scattered three hits with two strikeouts and a walk – allowing two runs.

#3 Vols Run-Rule Gators to Win Seventh Straight SEC Series

Game Recap: Baseball | May 04, 2024

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 3/3 Tennessee exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning to blow open a close game and secure its seventh straight SEC series win, toppling Florida 16-3 in seven innings on Saturday night at Condron Family Ballpark.

With the win, the Volunteers also recorded their fourth consecutive series win in Gainesville, something that has never been done before in program history.

Hunter Ensley led the way in UT’s offensive outburst with three run-producing hits, finishing with a pair of two-run doubles and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBIs.

Ensley’s career night started with a big two-out double in the top of the fourth to plate two runs and get the Big Orange on the board, cutting their deficit to one. The redshirt junior center fielder fouled off three straight 3-2 pitches before roping the ninth pitch of the at-bat off the base of the wall in left field to score Billy Amick and Dean Curley.

Tennessee built off that momentum and took control of the game with its 11-run sixth inning. The Vols got back-to-back RBI hits from Curley and Ensley after a walk from Kavares Tears and a Dylan Dreiling double put runners on second and third with no outs.

After five more runs had already crossed the plate, Ensley provided the exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home to right field to give UT a 13-3 lead.

Christian Moore and Blake Burke hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh to provide a little more insurance for the run-rule win. Moore had another productive game at the dish with three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Curley also had a really solid night with two RBI knocks and a team-leading three runs scored.

Nate Snead was dominant on the mount, striking out a career-high seven batters while allowing just one unearned run on two hits in five innings of relief to pick up the win and improve to 8-1 on the year.

The Gators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Ty Evans two-run home run in the bottom of the first and extended their advantage to 3-0 by scoring on a throwing error in the third, but it was all Vols from that point forward, as Tennessee scored 16 unanswered runs.

STATS OF THE GAME: The Vols posted their fifth run-rule win during SEC play this season, including their third on the road, with Saturday’s victory.

UT’s 11-run sixth inning was tied for its most runs scored in an inning this season, matching the 11 it scored in the third inning of a 16-0 victory over ETSU on Feb. 21.

UP NEXT: The Vols return home to take on Queens on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. before hitting the road once again for a weekend series in Nashville against Vanderbilt.
