KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Head Coach Holly Warlick met with members of the media prior to No. 6/6 Tennessee’s practice on Wednesday.  The Lady Vols (15-0, 3-0 SEC) are preparing to take on No. 17/16 Texas A&M (13-4, 2-1 SEC) in College Station, Texas on Thursday. Answering questions from the media, Warlick shared her thoughts on Mercedes Russell‘s career-high performance and what to expect from the Aggies.

Tennessee will face Texas A&M at 7 p.m. (6 CT) on Thursday in Reed Arena. The game will be televised by the SEC Network.

Head Coach Holly Warlick

On Mercedes Russell‘s career high against Vanderbilt:

“We got her the ball. We got her the ball, and she worked hard for it, and she finished and made plays. We made it an emphasis and our players got it and got her the ball. She shoots a great percentage, so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t get her the ball when she was five or six inches over the player guarding her from Vanderbilt.”

On if the team should have gotten Russell the ball more in previous games:

“I think we haven’t been consistent (in getting Russell the ball). We’ve shot the ball well from outside, so she probably hasn’t touched the ball as much when we were shooting a high percentage. But when she’s going against smaller people, we’ve got to get her the ball, and she’s doing a great job of working to get it.”

On what to expect from Russell going up against other top big players in the league over the next few games:

“Personally, I think Mercedes does better with somebody bigger guarding her. It’s hard as a big player – I haven’t experienced it – but people get under you, and it’s difficult to play when people are crowding you and getting under you. I think she’ll thrive on playing against somebody her size. She may not say that, but I think she competes and plays hard when she plays someone of her height level.”

On if Tennessee can continue its up-tempo offense against highly-ranked SEC teams:

“That’s how we play. We want to attack; we want to be the aggressor. Obviously, we want to turn you over on the defensive end to give us easy buckets, but we want to get to the free-throw line, and we want to attack. And so when we shoot a contested three, that’s not good. We want to get mid-range jumpers, open threes, and get the ball inside, and our group has done a really good job of, for the most part, sticking to the game plan, and the result is we’re getting to the free-throw line quite a bit.”

On if Tennessee’s defense allowing a 34.3 percent shooting to opponents so far is better than what she initially expected:

“I think we’re better consistently than what I anticipated. When I watch the freshmen, and the more I was around them and the more I watched them play and compete and their defensive commitment, I can see it now, but that’s huge for us. I really was not at the beginning of the year anticipating being a great (defensive team). And we can get better. That’s the great thing; we can get better. We can get better in a stance. We can get better at closing out… just little things that we can get better at.”

On what to expect from Texas A&M:

“They have two great shooters – (Chennedy) Carter and (Danni) Williams. They have a strong post player inside. They’re great rebounders – great rebounders. Gary (Blair) is going to control the tempo and try to limit our touches. They always play hard. He has them ready, and he gives them a great look every time. My concern with them is giving their shooters open looks and keeping them off the boards. They’re unbelievable offensive rebounders.”

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Named in Copyright Lawsuit Over “The Rest of Our Life”

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Named in Copyright Lawsuit Over “The Rest of Our Life”

The title track of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s recent duets album, The Rest of Our Life, is the subject of a new copyright lawsuit.

Songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden filed a complaint in a New York federal court that claims “The Rest of Our Life” is “blatant copying” of their 2014 song, “When I Found You.”

The songwriters for “The Rest of Our Life,” who are credited as Ed Sheeran, Amy Wadge, Johnny McDaid and Steve McCutcheon—are also named in the lawsuit that is seeking at least $5 million in actual damages, plus profits, a running royalty and attorney’s fees. Also named in the suit are Sony/ATV, Universal Polygram and WB Music.

The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Richard Busch, who successfully represented Marvin Gaye’s family in a suit against Pharrell and Robin Thicke over the song “Blurred Lines.”

Listen to Dan + Shay’s New Single, “Tequila”

Listen to Dan + Shay’s New Single, “Tequila”

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay are back on the radio airwaves with a new single, “Tequila,” which looks to be the duo’s first offering from their as-of-yet-announced third studio album.

The reflective ballad was co-penned by Dan, Jordan Reynolds and Nicolle Galyon.

“We love breaking it down in our live shows to an acoustic guitar, a piano and just the vocals,” says Dan. “The song starts with just Shay’s voice so the lyrics can really sink in. We’re really proud of the way the lyrics turned out on this one. We fell like the message takes people back to a certain place.”

Dierks Bentley Announces New Album, “The Mountain,” & Teases Title Track [Listen]

Dierks Bentley Announces New Album, “The Mountain,” & Teases Title Track [Listen]

Dierks Bentley announced he will release his upcoming ninth studio album, The Mountain, in early 2018.

The impetus for the album’s creation was Dierk’s June 2017 performance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the town of Telluride in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Dierks returned to Telluride a short time later for a week-long retreat with fellow songwriters Natalie Hemby, Luke Dick, Ross Copperman, Jon Randall, Jon Nite and Ashley Gorley and wrote the bulk of the album’s songs, including the title track.

“Telluride just makes you want to reach for your guitar,” says Dierks. “We all went out there and got completely off the grid . . . out of our normal element and the grind that happens on Music Row and it was, from the very get-go, magic. We’d wake up every morning, grab a coffee, take the gondola up, watch the sun come up over the mountains, and by 8:30 we were writing. We just wrote nonstop.”

Two months after the writing session, Dierks returned to Telluride with musicians and his production team—including producers Ross Copperman and Jon Randall and executive producer Arturo Buenahora—to record the album in a small studio atop a mesa outside of town.

“Obviously, the songs were written and recorded in the mountains,” says Dierks. “But it’s the mountain that we’re all faced with every day, and the struggle to put one foot in front of the other even when things are hard, that we all have in common. Looking back now, I think we were all searching for hope and optimism when we were writing this music.”

Williams’ 37 Points Leads #24 Vols to 92-84 Win at Vanderbilt

Williams’ 37 Points Leads #24 Vols to 92-84 Win at Vanderbilt

Vols F Grant Williams / Credit: UT Athletics

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A career night by Grant Williams lifted the 24th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers to a 92-84 victory over in-state rival Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Williams finished with a career-high 37 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists. Admiral Schofield posted his second straight 20-point performance, tying his career-high with 22 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.

UT’s 92 points in Memorial Gym was the most ever scored by a Tennessee squad, assisted by 40 points in the paint to match Vanderbilt’s hot shooting from beyond the arc.

Despite a 10-point deficit at the half, the Volunteers (11-4, 2-2 SEC) opened the second half by hitting 8-of-10 shots from the field and using a 10-0 run to give UT a 57-56 lead with 12:39 remaining.

After that, it was all Tennessee, as the Vols outscored the Commodores 57-39 in the second half to earn the road win. UT shot 57 percent (30-of-53) from the field to fuel its second double-digit comeback win away from home this season (other vs. Purdue).

The Dores were paced by freshman guard Saben Lee, who posted 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 32 minutes of action.

Vanderbilt (6-10, 1-3 SEC) had the hot hand early on, converting on seven consecutive field goals after starting 1-for-6 from the floor. However, the Vols’ aggressive play getting to the basket evened things out to make it 18-18 at 11:19 in the first half.

Williams dominated the paint during the first period, dropping 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with three rebounds and a block. Schofield chipped in nine points and five boards of his own to help UT shoot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the floor.

Despite a strong start by Tennessee, Vanderbilt struggled to miss throughout the entire frame, connecting on 59 percent (17-of-29) of its shots from the field. The Commodores knocked down eight threes, including one at the buzzer to make it a 45-35 game at intermission.

UP NEXT: The Vols return home for an important matchup against Texas A&M at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday. UT then heads to Missouri for a 9 p.m. ET tip against the Tigers and former Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin.

HAVE A NIGHT, MR. WILLIAMS: Grant Williams put on a show at Memorial Gym, posting a career-high 37 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. It was his third career 30-point performance as a Vol.
