They met by happenstance at a Michigan football camp more than 20 years ago.
Brady Hoke and Butch Jones were both assistant coaches at small schools.
Hoke said back then, Michigan would hire 60-70 coaches from all levels to work its camp.
“We developed a relationship,’’ Hoke said.
That relationship lasted for many years and at many stops for both Hoke and Jones.
When Hoke got his first head coaching job, at Ball State in 2003, one of the first calls he made was to the pal he met at Michigan’s camp.
Jones was an assistant at Central Michigan. Hoke offered Jones the wide receivers job.
“He turned me down,’’ Hoke said, in mock anger. “Hell yea I’m still mad about it.’’
Why did Jones say no?
“I don’t know,’’ Hoke said. “Maybe he didn’t want to work for a defensive coach.’’
Jones remembers that call. At the time, Jones was working for head coach Mike DeBord, who would later become Jones’ offensive coordinator at Tennessee (2015-16).
But Jones remembers the offer a bit differently.
“Brady offered me the offensive coordinator job,’’ Jones said. “It was very, very flattering. It was very, very tempting. Sometimes in this profession, loyalty wins out. I chose to stay at Central Michigan.’’
Jones was promoted to offensive coordinator at Central Michigan the next year.
“It’s amazing how things work out,’’ Jones said. “Our relationship didn’t end there. It continued to grow and grow and grow.’’
Fourteen years after Hoke tried to hire Jones, Jones tried to hire Hoke – at Tennessee.
Hoke said it was easy to accept Jones’ offer over the phone.
“No question about it,’’ Hoke said. “We play in a great conference. And you look at the great past and legacy that has been a part of Tennessee football. And Knoxville is a great city.’’
Jones said Hoke was “excited’’ and “intrigued’’ with the offer.
“He was able to follow our program and see everything we’ve done here,’’ Jones said. “He was very excited for the opportunity. I said, `Hey, here’s where we’re at.’
“There wasn’t any negotiating. It was `I’m in, let’s go.’’’
Hoke said his brief stay in Knoxville has been a “great experience’’ so far.
’’It’s a great place,’’ Hoke said, “and we’re privileged and humbled to be here.’’

Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and his wife, Hayley, announced they were expecting their first child—a baby boy—in June. As it turns out, blood tests aren’t always correct.
Today (Aug. 4) on Instagram, Tyler revealed that he and Hayley are actually expecting a girl.
Tyler posted a pic of his family with the caption: “Gods got jokes……After thinking we are having a boy for the last few months, turns out the blood test was wrong and we’re actually having a little girl. Woe… so many emotions but really really excited about this next chapter even if God does like throwing us a curve ball every now and then. Just keeping us on our toes. #daddysgirl.”

Showtime will premiere a new documentary on Tim McGraw and Faith Hill on Nov. 17.
Tim & Faith: Soul2Soul will give fans an inside look at the superstar couple on the road through their latest Soul2Soul Tour, with a focus on how Tim and Faith brought their signature tour back to life after 10 years.
“We’re really excited about [the tour] because it’s such a musical show,” said Tim to Nash Country Daily in April. “The band—there’s a lot of moments in this show that really highlights how good our band is—they are fantastic. We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. For me, the chances that I get to watch Faith sing, it’s like a Nascar trying to keep up with an Indy car when we’re out there. Nascar is pretty good, but Indy car is fast. It’s a long show, we’re getting to play some great songs that we really love and we have a few surprises for everyone in there.”
“Tim is one of the greatest entertainers that’s ever graced the stage and that is the honest-to-God truth,” added Faith. “I haven’t been on tour in 10 years, but we worked really, really hard for many months preparing, putting together, dissecting this show with a lot of very talented people. So once the moment comes that we are actually able to get on the road and get going and out there playing for the fans, it’s like a celebration when we hit the stage.”
Tim & Faith: Soul2Soul premieres on Showtime on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. CT.
