Jimmy’s blog: McCleskey overcomes odds to make Knoxville Hall of Fame

By Jimmy Hyams

When J. J. McCleskey walked on at Tennessee, the Karns High School product was about 5-foot-5 and 135 pounds.

Nobody gave him a chance to make a mark in college, not even lower level programs.

You can measure size but you can’t measure heart. And it was heart – doused with a mix of competitive spirit – that allowed McCleskey to become a captain at Tennessee, play both ways and enjoy an eight-year NFL career despite never touching the tape at 5-foot-8.

McCleskey will be inducted tonight into the 36th annual Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame along with eight others.

McCleskey might have overcome the longest odds of them all.

“It’s just an honor,’’ McCleskey said. “The past people that are already in the Hall of Fame have paved the way for me to be where I’m at today. It’s a humbling experience.’’

Where McCleskey is today is training young athletes. He’s in his sixth year of running Mental Edge, near New Orleans.

“I tell ya man, I get some great athletes,’’ McCleskey said. “But I get better kids that work hard.’’

He calls his facility Mental Edge because “in sports, if you have mental toughness, you have a mental edge. If you have the knowledge to study and have preparation, you can be better than what you are.’’

McCleskey said it’s important for high school and college – even pros – athletes to play to their speed. He said few do.

“There are ways to do that,’’ he said. “You just have to be disciplined and seek the wisdom for it.’’

McCleskey played to his speed and overachieved at Tennessee. His fearless nature contributed. He wasn’t scared to go head-to-head in practice with Carl Pickens or Alvin Harper. He wasn’t afraid to run routes against UT’s best DBs.

It was that attitude that helped him become a UT team captain in 1992 and play eight seasons in the NFL at receiver and cornerback for the Saints and Cardinals.

Some of McCleskey’s spunk has apparently been transferred to his won, receiver Jalen McCleskey, who is the leading returning receiver in the Big 12 after catching 73 passes as a sophomore for Oklahoma State last year.

McCleskey said his son fit the “culture’’ and “system’’ run by Oklahoma State.

“That’s the reason why he picked Oklahoma State,’’ McCleskey said.

Jalen wasn’t offered by Tennessee.

“People think that at one time that I was upset and everything,’’ McCleskey said, “but you have to go where you fit.

“Would I have loved for my son to play at the University of Tennessee? Absolutely. But was Oklahoma State the right fit for him? Absolutely.’’

And the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame is the right fit for McCleskey, who battled long odds to make it big.

Mickey Guyton Shares Wedding Pics + 5 Things You May Not Know About Her

Mickey Guyton Shares Wedding Pics + 5 Things You May Not Know About Her

Mickey Guyton and Grant Savoy tied the knot in June at Hawaii’s Kauai Marriott Resort in front of a small group of family and friends.

Mickey shared a few pics on Instagram, saying, in part, “I’ve. Been. Dying. To. Share. These! 6.26.2017 My man sure can have #NiceThings 💍love y’all.”

Mickey, a CMT Next Women of Country alumni, released her new single, “Nice Things,” on July 28. She co-wrote the song with Liz Rose and Stephanie Chapman.

Check out the photos below, as well as five things you may not know about the 34-year-old Texas native.

5 Things You May Not Know About Mickey

  1. “I have a major sweet tooth. I could eat sweets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But I don’t like sweetened cereal, which is kind of crazy.”
  2. “I usually have to fall asleep with the TV on.
  3. OK, this is a really weird one. I wet the bed as a little kid so my mom would make me use the bathroom before I went to bed. And now, I still go to the bathroom before I get in bed. I cannot break that habit. I’m a grown woman, for goodness sake.”
  4. “I get car sick, or, more accurately, bus sick. The motion does it to me.”
  5. “I have a mild obsession with the British culture. The history, the way they talk—it’s all fascinating.”

Justin Moore’s “Devil Stool” Skit from “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Earns Emmy Nomination [Watch]

Justin Moore’s “Devil Stool” Skit from “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Earns Emmy Nomination [Watch]

If the measure of a man is his sense of humor, consider Justin Moore 10 feet tall.

Justin showed off his zany sense of humor on Jimmy Kimmel Live last year by singing a cautionary tale, “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool),” about a Norwegian man who claimed he, well, got one of his family jewels stuck in an IKEA shower stool.

The skit, which was written by Jimmy and Gary Greenberg, recently earned an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category.

“If you had told me I would be a part of earning an Emmy nod for singing a song about what I did, I would have thought you were crazy,” said Justin. “Nonetheless, it’s very cool to hear. I’m excited for Jimmy and his crew. Hopefully, we can bring it home. They told me this week they would share it with me, so it would be pretty cool to add an Emmy to the mantle.”

Watch Brad Paisley Put a Comedic Twist on “She’s Everything” & Perform “Last Time for Everything” on “Seth Meyers”

Brad Paisley stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers last night (Aug. 2) to perform his current single, “Last Time for Everything,” and chat about his upcoming Netflix comedy special, Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo, which drops on Aug. 15.

Before he performed “Last Time for Everything,” Brad gave fans a taste of what to expect from his comedy special by putting a comedic twist on his 2006 No. 1 single, “She’s Everything.”

“She’s a yellow pair of running shoes, a hole-y pair of jeans, she looks great in cheap sunglasses, she a passive aggressive little thing,” Brad sang as he strummed the guitar. “She’s almost everything I ever wanted, almost everything I need . . . ”

Mike Fisher, who married Carrie Underwood in 2010, has retired from the NHL after 17 season, according to The Tennessean.

Mike, 37, was the team captain for the Nashville Predators in 2017, leading them to the Stanley Cup Final. Mike played the last seven seasons in Nashville after being traded by the Ottawa Senators in 2010.

“I approached this season with the mindset that it could be my last, and now that it’s past, I’m looking forward to a future that includes a lot more time with my family,” Mike said to The Tennessean. “Things change when you have kids and you have a family. They’ve supported me without question, and now it’s my turn to return the favor.”

Mike and Carrie had their first child, Isaiah, in 2015.

Carrie posted a pic of Mike on Instagram this morning (Aug. 3) with the caption: “Captain @mfisher1212 I sure am going to miss watching you play and cheering you on with the rest of Smashville, but I so look forward to seeing what God has in store for you in this next chapter of your life. Keith Urban loves to collaborate with other artists. “The Fighter,” his duet with Carrie Underwood, is the No. 1 song on the Mediabase chart this week.

In 2013, Keith teamed with Miranda Lambert to sing “We Were Us,” saying, “[Miranda] was the first artist that popped into my head. She opened some shows for us a few years ago and we would do a song together each night, and I always loved how our voices blended together.”

Last week (July 26) at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, Calif., Keith invited special guest Lauren Alaina onstage during his set to treat fans to a performance of “We Were Us.”

“We don’t get to do this song . . . uh . . . ever in our set,” Keith said, “but I heard Lauren sing it, and I’m like, ‘You gotta come up and sing this song with me.’”

And Lauren did.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum will explore the life and career of Loretta Lynn in its new exhibit, Loretta Lynn: Blue Kentucky Girl, which opens Aug. 25 and runs through Aug. 5, 2018.

“I am so excited for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s exhibit to open this month,” said Loretta. “It’s gonna show off my 50-some-odd years in country music, and I’m so proud to share my life and music with the museum. Y’all come see us.”

Loretta suffered a stroke in May and is currently recovering.

Loretta Lynn: Blue Kentucky Girl exhibition highlights include:

  • Green chiffon Lillie Rubin gown worn by Loretta at the 1972 CMA Awards, where she was named Entertainer of the Year.

  • Red dress embellished with beads and sequins, worn by Loretta on the cover of her 1968 album, Fist City.

In addition to Loretta’s new showcase, an exhibit on Faith Hill and Tim McGraw will open in November.
