Need to Know

The Volunteers are riding an 18-game win streak entering Friday’s series opener against the Tigers, which is the longest current winning streak in the country. The streak is also the longest by UT since winning 19 in a row back in 2013. The Big Orange are coming off a pair of walk-off wins over then No. 9 Alabama last weekend before having the third game cancelled due to weather.

Beating the Best

The Vols have had great success against ranked opponents this season, posting an 11-3 record against such teams. Tennessee has won 10 straight games against ranked foes, which is the longest winning streak by any SEC team this season. No. 16 LSU will be the eighth ranked opponent UT has faced this season. The Big Orange have 202 wins all time against ranked teams and 95 victories against teams ranked in the top-10.

The Dynamic Duo

Tennessee’s one-two punch of Meghan Gregg and Brooke Vines have been one of the most productive pairs in college softball this season. The duo ranks first and second in the SEC in RBIs with 62 and 48, respectively. Gregg’s 62 runs driven in lead the entire country as well. Both players have already set, or are on pace to set career highs in numerous offensive categories. Gregg ranks in the top-25 nationally in RBIs, batting average, doubles, slugging, on-base percentage and total bases while Vines is also among the top-25 in the country in hits and RBIs. Vines has also reached base in 18 straight games and has had at least one RBI in 15 of the past 18 games.

How Sweep It Is

The Vols have swept their last four weekend series after taking two games from Alabama in a weather-shorted series last weekend. The last time UT had four consecutive series sweeps was back in 2013.

Power Arms

The Tennessee pitching staff has been dominant this season, ranking 13th nationally with a 1.59 team ERA. The duo of Matty Moss and Caylan Arnold have combined for 37 wins and 248 strikeouts this season. UT, Florida and Alabama are the only teams in the conference that have two pitchers with 100 or more strikeouts each. Moss ranks fifth in the league with 133 strikeouts and Arnold’s 115 punchouts are the most by a Tennessee freshman since Ellen Renfroe had 259 in 2011.

Scouting Report

LSU Tigers (33-12, 8-7 SEC)

LSU coming off a 5-2 midweek win over Northwestern State to snap a four-game losing streak. The Tigers were swept by Ole Miss last weekend after losing two of three games at Alabama two weeks ago. They are led by a strong pitching staff that features three pitchers with none or more wins. Junior right hander Carley Hoover ranks third in the SEC with a 0.95 ERA while fellow junior Allie Walljasper leads the team with 11 wins and four shutouts.

The potent pairing of Bailey Landry and Savannah Jaquish led the Tigers’ attack. Landry leads the SEC and ranks second nationally with a .483 batting average while Jaquish leads the team and ranks fifth in the SEC with 43 RBIs.

UT’s All-Time Record vs. LSU: 28-25-1

LSU has won six of the past nine meetings in the series after losing seven straight from 2010-12. The Tigers defeated the Vols in extra innings of last year’s SEC Tournament semifinals before falling to Auburn in the championship game.

What’s Next?

Tennessee returns home for another showdown between SEC heavyweights as No. 1 Florida visits Sherri Parker Lee Stadium for a three-game series April 28-30.

Jerrod Niemann Renews Wedding Vows and Takes on Role of Wedding Singer During Six Ceremonies

Jerrod Niemann Renews Wedding Vows and Takes on Role of Wedding Singer During Six Ceremonies

“You guys are off to a great start, don’t ya think?”

Those are the words uttered by Adam Sandler’s character in the movie, The Wedding Singer. The words every bride and groom want to hear after tying the knot (see video clip below).

The words may be different, but the idea is the same when Jerrod Niemann became a personal wedding singer, surprising newlyweds in six back-to-back weddings throughout Las Vegas. Jerrod made his way through the High Roller Observation Wheel and the Mob Museum to Denny’s and the Chapel of Flowers, singing for the newlywed couples.

Overtaken with emotion from the evening—Jerrod, with help of the “official Elvis of Las Vegas,” Jesse Garon, renewed his own vows with his wife of two years, Morgan, at A Little White Wedding Chapel.

“Since I recorded ‘God Made A Woman,’ I hoped it would touch others’ lives like it has impacted my wife and me,” said Jerrod in a statement. “To share special moments with other couples in Las Vegas was unbelievable. Hopefully more folks out there will be able to experience something special with the song as well.”

Sarah Dunn Band Explores New Territory on “Unbridle Me”

Sarah Dunn Band Explores New Territory on “Unbridle Me”

Sarah Dunn Band recently released their new album, Unbridle Me, and the nine tracks mark welcomed growth from the group’s lead singer and chief songwriter, Sarah Dunn. The project includes a real-life murder ballad ripped straight from the headlines as well as the group’s latest single, “Figure It Out,” which marks the first ballad the band has had as a single. Throughout Unbridle Me, Sarah says her hope is that the music will reach listeners in a positive way.

As Sarah explains, “Figure It Out” took a while to write as it is a culmination of her experiences and stories from others. A tale of a woman struggling to get past her former relationship she questions, “How could you move on so fast with your life when I can’t even close my eyes at night?”

“It’s especially personal because I’ve been in that situation where as much as you may want a relationship to work, or you know you’re willing to work for it, it falls apart nonetheless,” Sarah tells Nash Country Daily. “It can be one of those things where you’re still reaching and the other party is starting to move on. It’s a very difficult thing, but it’s something I think everybody feels at one point in their life.”

Sarah dug deep for the release and wrote every song featured on Unbridle Me. She says it was important for her to grow as a songwriter and not be afraid to explore different subjects and to be raw and vulnerable in her writing. The album includes strong female characters on songs like barn burner “A Cautionary Tale” where she sings about an outlaw female making her own decisions in life. A memorable song, Sarah credits her mother for her sense of boldness.

“She’s been one of my biggest champions in my life and I always bounce ideas off of her,” Sarah explains. “She’s given me a sense of boldness about sharing real things, or sharing things that are real and possibly personal to me. That’s a deep well that you can draw from. She really has given me confidence. She helped me through times when I felt very discouraged. She’s just one of those people that never gives up and never gives up on a person.”

On “The Ballad of Ellie Nesler” the selfless love of another mother is showcased, this time Ellie Nesler who famously made headlines for taking the law into her own hands when she shot and killed her son’s abuser. Sarah says everything she penned within the song happened to Nesler and her love of story-songs helped her get the point across.

“The story itself of what happened to her in her life and to her son, it was so gripping to me because I have a very close relationship with my mom and it’s the story about a mother who would go to any lengths to protect her child,” Sarah explains.

On the song Sarah sings, “There ain’t no volunteers to walk that mile in Ellie’s shoes.” As she shares, one really doesn’t know how she will react until put in that position. It is this lyric that drives the song home.

Sarah says she appreciates hearing strong female characters in country music and it’s women like her mother and grandmother that inspire her to continue forging her own path within the genre.

“I think it’s important to remind women that they can do anything and everything that they set out to do,” she concedes. “I’m glad to put out songs about strong women because I think it’s important for women to be tough.”

Jimmy’s blog: UT allotment for GT game is 25,000

Jimmy’s blog: UT allotment for GT game is 25,000

Gary Stokan of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic told SportsRadio WNML today that he has “full assurance’’ the Tennessee-Georgia Tech game Sept. 4 and the Alabama-Florida State game Sept. 2 will be played in Atlanta’s new Mercedes Benz Stadium, adjacent to the Georgia Dome.

“I have talked with them (officials) daily over the last week,’’ Stokan said. “We’ll be in good shape. It’s the fourth event (UT-GT) in there.’’

Due to construction delays, the first event that was scheduled, an MLS soccer match July 30, has been moved. Delays were caused by issues over the retractable roof, which is expected to be closed for the first few games.

The delay is the third one thus far. The new $1.53 billion stadium was supposed to open March 1, then was pushed back to June 1, then July 30.

The first event will be an Aug. 26 exhibition game between the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona, followed by an Aug. 31 exhibition between the Falcons and Jacksonville.

Meanwhile, Stokan said Tennessee (25,000 tickets) and Georgia Tech (30,000) have each  sold out their allotment.

Stokan also said the Alabama-FSU game is sold out.

“We need more tickets,’’ Stokan said of the 71,000-seat Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “We have two hard sellouts for sure.’’

Actually, neither of those schools has actually sold its allotment, but is responsible for those tickets, per the contract agreement.

An official at the UT ticket office said the UT-Georgia Tech tickets have yet to go on sale; that donors would have first crack May 16-31, then tickets would go on sale to the general public in July. That’s in line with what UT typically does for a bowl game – sell to donors first, then the general public.

Tickets range from $80 to $205.

Stokan said the Georgia Dome won’t be demolished until a certificate for occupancy is used for the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That could mean that if the new stadium isn’t ready by Sept. 2 or 4, those games could be played in the Georgia Dome.

The Georgia Dome was initially set to be torn down in June but that has been delayed due to construction delays for the new stadium.
