KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee took the field for the first of 15 spring practices on Tuesday, putting in two hours of work in helmets and shorts at Haslam Field.
“I liked the energy. I liked our approach,” said Vols head coach Butch Jones after Tuesday’s workout. “Everyone was trying to lead. That gets back to everyone can lead in their own way, shape and form. I like that. Now it’s just getting down to the fine details and habits.”
Tennessee saw five mid-year enrollees take the practice field for the first time on Tuesday as defensive lineman Deandre Johnson, offensive lineman Riley Locklear, quarterback Will McBride, linebacker Shanon Reid and offensive lineman Trey Smith made their debut at Haslam Field.
Those newcomers were joined on the field by a handful of new faces in the coaching staff. Associate head coach and defensive line coach Brady Hoke, quarterbacks coach Mike Canales, defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator Charlton Warren, and wide receivers coach Kevin Beard joined recently promoted offensive coordinator Larry Scott and offensive line coach Walt Wells for Tuesday’s practice session.
Tennessee returns to workouts on Thursday and Saturday of this week, establishing a weekly practice schedule that covers the next five weeks before culminating with the annual DISH Orange & White Game on April 22 (4 p.m. ET, SEC Network).

Senior OL Jashon Robertson
(On having veterans on the offensive line coming into the season)
“I was young, our offensive line has been young. We have had a few seasons now where we have had to start two true freshmen. It is definitely nice. At the end of the day it is nice to have guys that you have been around, who you can make calls with and sometimes you do not even have to make the call everyone is just on the same page.”
RS Freshman QB Jarrett Guarantano
(On the first day of practice)
“The first day with Team 121 was a great day, we got after it. A lot of new coaches on the field so we were just excited to get things started.”
Junior QB Quinten Dormady
(On the first day of practice)
“There are always things to improve on. No one is perfect. Like I said I am just trying to be consistent. My strengths I feel like I can make all of the throws and on top of that it is just being consistent.”

Here are some of my observations and notes from the first University of Tennessee spring football practice.
Vince’s View
*We were able to view stretching and the first four periods of practice #1 on Tuesday.
*The QB obsession is on! Most of the media was gathered near the quarterbacks to get any sort of video, photo or eye ball view of the biggest story of the spring and the entire off-season, the quarterback battle. The focus is on two guys, junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano.
*The quarterbacks worked on the deep fade during one period. Both Dormady and Guarantano were long and short with some throws at the start of the drill. Both got into a nice rhythm though and threw some pretty and accurate deep balls.
*New QB coach Mike Canales is non-stop coaching. He’s commenting and coaching details the entire time on every rep in drills when the QBs go one at a time. Just having the extra attention is going to be welcomed.
*The running backs look so small out there when you’re used to seeing massive Jalen Hurd. I know he left last year, but it was a site we grew accustomed to in seeing such a massive human so close to us in the RB group. UT doesn’t have big backs (Kelly at 5’9 and Fils-aime at 5’11) and those are the only two scholarship backs in the spring.
*John Kelly has an alpha personality. You can hear him as loud as any player we were around. He will be mentioned as one of the team leaders by players and coaches this spring.
*Redshirt sophomore Austin Smith has returned to linebacker where he started his career. He was projected to fill a hybrid OLB/DE role last season in the Curt Maggitt mold, but he missed the season due to injuries. That’s also one less defensive lineman in an already razor thin position group. Butch Jones confirmed the move after practice today.
*VFL and former LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin was at practice looking on.
*The 8 players that are out for all of spring practice all were with their position groups adding support. Those 8 are: DT Kendal Vickers, DT Shy Tuttle, DE Kyle Phillips, DB Rashaun Gaulden, DB Micah Abernathy, OT Brett Kendrick, WR Josh Smith, WR Brandon Johnson
*Steve Stripling, no longer an assistant coach, was still at practice roaming around.
*Trey Smith was working drills at left tackle, as expected. He looked good, but it is very early and pads often are a game changer on how players look.

Brad Paisley has fallen in love with the South, and “Heaven South” is his ode to that special place below the Mason-Dixon line.
“Heaven South” pays homage to the easygoing life in the South with lyrics like “Beer battered chicken, sweet ice tea / Night crawlers, crickets and a Zebco 33 / Old Glory waving at you / As you’re driving by the court house / And it’s just another day in Heaven South.”
The new tune, written by Brad, Brent Anderson and Chris DuBois, is the second offering from Brad’s upcoming 11th studio album, Love and War, due out April 21.

It’s good to have friends in high places.
Today show host Hoda Kotb, who adopted a baby girl, Haley Joy, earlier this year, received the cutest gift from her friend Carrie Underwood. The “Church Bells” singer sent Hoda a mini pair of pink cowboy boots and a monogrammed baby blanket for her little girl.
After Carrie sent the present, Hoda posted a picture on her social media accounts thanking the country superstar for the gift.
“Hey @carrieunderwood !!! Haley Joy loves her very first pair of cowboy boots!!! 🤠Can’t wait until you meet her ! Thank you 😍👶🏼❤️❤️,” Hoda captioned the post.
Check out Haley Joy’s first little pair of pink boots from the ever-thoughtful Carrie Underwood.
