Funeral and Visitation Services Announced for Ruth Jackson, Mother of Alan Jackson

Funeral and Visitation Services Announced for Ruth Jackson, Mother of Alan Jackson

Family and friends will come together to remember the life and love of Ruth Jackson—mother of country icon Alan Jackson—during funeral and visitation services on Thursday (Jan. 12). Mama Ruth, as she was affectionately known, died peacefully at her home in Newnan, Ga., on Jan. 7 at the age of 86.

Mama Ruth’s funeral will be at 2 p.m. at the Newnan Central Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

“One thing about my mom is that she still lives in the same place in Newnan, Ga.,” Alan told Country Weekly magazine in 2005. “She was about 16 when she got married. Dad got back home from the Navy and took her out of high school. They had a place near my grandfather’s and that’s where they lived. That’s all she’s ever known. She never wanted to be in a nursing home. She is sort of feeble now and she does have care in the home, but she never wanted to leave and we hope that she can stay there. I basically wrote the song ‘Home’ about her.”

Below you can watch Alan sing “Home,” including the heartfelt lyrics My mama raised five children / Four girls, and there was me / She found her strength in faith of God / And a love of family / She never had a social life / Home was all she knew / Except the time she took a job / To pay a bill or two.

“Nash Country Daily” Readers Vote Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani the Next Country Couple to Get Engaged

“Nash Country Daily” Readers Vote Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani the Next Country Couple to Get Engaged

The people have spoken. And those people believe that Blake Shelton will be the next country artist to get down on one knee to propose to his pop-star girlfriend, Gwen Stefani.

With a plethora of country engagements coming at the end of 2016, Nash Country Daily put together a poll to find out which country artist our readers think will be the next to get engaged. We picked eight country couples who are currently dating—some longer than others—and asked our readers to vote.

After thousands of votes were tallied, Blake and Gwen came out on top with 44.1% of the vote.

It was neck and neck in the early voting with Lindsay Ell and boyfriend Bobby Bones—who have only been dating a few months—giving the high-profile couple a run for their money. But Lindsay and Bobby ended up coming in second place with 30.4% of the vote.

Rounding out the Top 5: Cassadee Pope and Rian Dawson (7.1%), Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd (6.5%) and Miranda Lambert and Anderson East (6.3%).

We’ll keep you posted when the news breaks. Thanks for voting.

The 10 Best-Selling Digital Songs of 2016 Include Tunes by Dan + Shay, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett and Kelsea Ballerini—But Who’s No. 1?

The 10 Best-Selling Digital Songs of 2016 Include Tunes by Dan + Shay, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett and Kelsea Ballerini—But Who’s No. 1?

According to Billboard and Nielsen Music, individual track sales took a hit in 2016, dropping from 113.9 million units sold in 2015 to 87.5 million units in 2016. Even with the 26.4-million decline, two artists managed to release singles that soared over the 1-million mark: Florida Georgia Line’s “H.O.L.Y” (1.37 million) and Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind” (1.02 million). Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man” (910,000) fell just short of the 1-million threshold.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Maren Morris’ “My Church” (830,000) and Dierks Bentley’s “Somewhere on a Beach” (697,000).

10 Top-Selling Country Digital Songs of 2016
  1. “H.O.L.Y.” – Florida Georgia Line – 1,379,000
  2. “Humble and Kind” – Tim McGraw – 1,023,000
  3. “Die a Happy Man” – Thomas Rhett – 910,000
  4. “My Church” – Maren Morris – 830,000
  5. “Somewhere on a Beach” – Dierks Bentley – 697,000
  6. “You Should Be Here” – Cole Swindell – 681,000
  7. “Blue Ain’t Your Color” – Keith Urban – 660,000
  8. “Head Over Boots” – Jon Pardi – 626,000
  9. “From the Ground Up” – Dan + Shay – 607,000
  10. “Peter Pan” – Kelsea Ballerini – 604,000

Interestingly enough, only one song on the list didn’t ascend to the top of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart in 2016: Maren Morris’ “My Church,” which peaked at No. 9. Maren’s performance of the tune at the CMA Awards, as well as winning the CMA New Artist of the Year, certainly helped increase sales.

Blake Shelton Adds “The Voice” Season 11 Winner, Sundance Head, to Tour

Blake Shelton announced that he will be adding Sundance Head, the guy that gave Blake his fifth win as coach on NBC’s The Voice this past season, to his Doing It To Country Songs Tour.

Sundance is the second Voice alum that will be joining the superstar for a 13-date run next month. RaeLynn, a Season 2 contestant and Team Blake member, was announced late last year as part of Blake’s tour.

“I’m excited to get back out on the road and bring new music from If I’m Honest, some previous hits and a few surprises,” said Blake in a statement. “Having RaeLynn on the tour again is terrific, and I’m thrilled Sundance is joining and bringing his incredible musical talents.”

Sundance, while on The Voice, belted out tunes like Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Etta James’ “At Last” and Ottis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” to show off his vocal prowess. But the chance to be a part of Blake’s tour has the singer eager to learn even more from his mentor.

“I’m just elated and really excited about being able to perform with a great entertainer and learn something from him while I’m on the road” Sundance said. “It’s going to be the most fun thing I’ve ever done.”

Blake’s Doing It To Country Songs Tour kicks off in Bakersfield, Calif., on Feb. 16 with stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Chicago, where you’ll hear songs from his current album, If I’m Honest, including his current Top 3 single, “A Guy With a Girl.

Jake Owen to Get Youth Baseball Park Named After Him Thanks to NASCAR Champ Kevin Harvick

Jake Owen to Get Youth Baseball Park Named After Him Thanks to NASCAR Champ Kevin Harvick

2016 was quite a year for Jake Owen. The Florida native released his fifth studio album, American Love, which hit the top spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, he saw his single “American Country Love Song” go to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and he found out that his friend, NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick, would be naming a baseball park after him. Now, that’s how you close out a year.

Kevin surprised his friend—at the Kevin Harvick sixth annual Dinner, Auction and Concert in December—by announcing that The Kevin Harvick Foundation and The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation would open a Youth Development Park in honor of the “Alone With You” singer, creating Jake Owen Field, in his hometown of Vero Beach, Fla.

Kevin and Jake have been friends for many years, meeting at a charity even that the NASCAR champion asked Jake to be involved in. Kevin also made a cameo in Jake’s 2015 video for the single “Real Life.” Check out Kevin celebrating in the back of a truck around the 2:14 mark.

According to Veronews.com, two youth-league baseball fields – including one with a synthetic turf surface – will be built at Vero Beach’s Michael Field complex, where construction is scheduled to begin in January and the new fields are expected to be ready for play in March.

So, if you ever had that urge to run all over Jake Owen, you can do so when Jake Owen Field opens to the public in Summer 2017.

CMT’s “Nashville” Scores Big Ratings for the Cable Channel, But Well Below the ABC Average

CMT’s “Nashville” Scores Big Ratings for the Cable Channel, But Well Below the ABC Average

The TV rating for CMT’s premiere of Nashville are in—and while the numbers are good compared to CMT standards, they fall well below what the series averaged at its previous home on ABC.

Check out some of the bullet points below for CMT’s debut of the series on Jan. 5.

  • The premiere drew more than 2 million viewers on CMT (.80 rating with adults 18-49 and .93 rating with adults 25-54).
  • 3.1 million viewers tuned in with the encore airing on Nick at Nite and added DVR totals.
  • The premiere of Nashville is the most watched original telecast in CMT history.
  • The premiere also did well on social, ranking as No. 1 on Nielsen Social Content ratings series and specials.
  • Nashville‘s CMT-only rating is nearly triple the network’s prime-time average.
  • More good news: these numbers don’t reflect viewers on Hulu, which streams the episode one day after CMT.
  • The finale broadcast season of Nashville on ABC averaged 4.2 million live viewers (1.0 rating among adults 18-49) with 6.6 million viewers when DVR is factored in.

New episodes of Nashville air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CMT. This week, Maddie begins an internship at a recording studio and meets a street musician. Avery struggles producing a young YouTube sensation and Juliette meets her guardian angel.

UT Sports | Barnett: A Letter to Vol Nation

BARNETT: A LETTER TO VOL NATION

Defensive end Derek Barnett pens a thank you to UT, his family and Vol Nation after declaring for the NFL Draft

Jan. 11, 2017

Over the last few weeks, I’ve really thought about my time at the University of Tennessee and the people who have had the biggest impact on me. Playing at a prestigious, SEC program and then having the opportunity to declare for the NFL Draft after three years is a dream come true.

I’d like to thank my teammates. The relationships I’ve built with them will last a lifetime. I’m very grateful to have been able to grow over these last few years with my brothers.

Thank you to the football staff and specifically Coach Stripling, who dedicated a lot of time to the D-line room, helping us get better on the field and also being better men off the field. Thank you to Coach Ollie for helping me improve daily in my film study and for being critical of me. And thank you to Coach Jones for giving me the opportunity to play at a great university and represent my home state.

Thank you to all of the training staff and the equipment managers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure my teammates and I were prepared to go to work every day.

Thank you to the University of Tennessee for the opportunity to be a student-athlete at a great institution. Thank you to all of my professors and the Thornton Center staff for helping me balance all that goes into becoming a successful student-athlete.

I’d also like to thank Vol Nation – the best fans in the country – who have supported me from Day One.

Thank you to my family and close friends for being supportive of me and helping everything fall into place.

And thank you to my mother, Ms. Christine. Thank you for your hard work. I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked since I was a kid. I have always been inspired by that and that’s where I get my motivation from. Thank you for your everlasting love and support.

Foregoing my senior year was a hard decision but it has always been my dream to play in the NFL.

As I enter the next journey of my life, it’s most important to me that you know, all I’ve ever wanted to do was represent the Tennessee Football program and my home state of Tennessee well.

Thank you for the great times and many memories – and God Bless,

Derek Barnett
