5 Questions With “Forever Country” Producer Shane McAnally, Who Reveals What Other Songs Were in Contention for the Mashup

5 Questions With “Forever Country” Producer Shane McAnally, Who Reveals What Other Songs Were in Contention for the Mashup

By now you’ve probably seen and heard that 30 of country music’s biggest stars—both past and present—have come together to record a new song and video, “Forever Country,” for the CMA Awards’ 50-year anniversary.

The star-studded mashup features a fresh take on three of country’s most classic songs: John Denver’s “Take Me Home,” Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The new tune, which was produced by Shane McAnally, features vocals from Willie, Dolly, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert and many more.

“Forever Country” producer Shane McAnally, who also co-arranged the song, sat down with Nash Country Daily this morning (Sept. 21) to answer five questions about the new mashup. Shane has won multiple Grammys, CMAs and ACMs as a producer and songwriter, and he has penned multiple No. 1 hits, including “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney), “Say You Do” (Dierks Bentley) and “Take Your Time” (Sam Hunt), among others.

NCD: What was your role in selecting the three songs that made the final mashup?

A big role. Luckily the CMA board had an idea of a group of songs that would be in contention. There were about 40 songs on the list, most of which were previous CMA Song of the Year winners. Ultimately, they respected the fact that melodically and quarterly speaking, not every song can be mashed up with every other song. Josh Osborne, who I arranged the song with, had messed with some different versions. There were some other songs that we tried in different forms before we settled on the three. In fact, I envisioned one song being the focus, it was director Joseph Kahn who suggested the mashup.

Can you mention a couple of the songs that were in contention and what ultimately led you to selecting “Take Me Home,” “On the Road Again” and “I Will Always Love You?”

We had Glen Campbell’s “Gentle on My Mind” with “On the Road Again” at one point. We also tried Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler.” Ultimately, everyone felt like “I Will Always Love You” was the centerpiece that we needed. I was having a hard time figuring out how that song could sing with any other song because it’s such a personal song. It’s a song to one person. When it’s sung over “Take Me Home,” it takes on a new life. It feels like you’re singing to the music. That was just insight others had that I couldn’t see because I was too in the middle of it. They kept saying just try “I Will Always Love You,” and I’m glad I did, clearly, because being able to end on Dolly singing “I Will Always Love You” feels like you are looking back over the history of country music. I was literally laying in bed thinking about these songs and how to make it work and got up and sang the idea into my phone one night.

There were 30 artists involved. How did you get so many stars to commit to the project?

It started with previous CMA winners, which helped to at least narrow it down. We said we’re going to do a mashup like “We Are the World,” and people were like “What?” After Dolly and George Strait agreed to do it, it felt like everyone took a step back and were like, ‘Wait, what is this?” Then we were able to put all of those asks out to the stars. You had to be available twice. One to sing. One to shoot the video. And it was in the summertime when they are all touring heavily. So I think we got very lucky. It was an act of God. They shot the video during CMA Fest so the artists were just running through. I think we were very lucky. There were just a handful of people who we just couldn’t get their schedules to work.

You must like huge projects. After co-writing Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical with Brandy Clark last year, you jumped right into this.

Weirdly, I’ve recently discovered about myself that I am a person who thrives in chaos, and I think that a lot of times we don’t think that about ourselves, but for different people, I’m much calmer moving around that way. Maybe it’s a creative ADD. I like to be a part of as many things as I can because I feel like I’m striking while the iron is hot. I want to do as much as I can while I can, and right now people are listening. So I just want to say “Yes.”

Did “Forever Country” sound like too big of an undertaking?

I certainly thought that “Forever Country” was [too big]. When we presented it to the board with a demo and a budget, it was a lot of money to make this video. Joseph Kahn, the director, is a world-renowned Grammy-winning director, and it was going to be a lot of money. The way he does things is expensive. When they first heard the demo version of the mashup as it is now, they approved it. And I was sitting there half elated and the other half was “Oh sh*t, what have I gotten myself into?” I don’t know that any of us know what we are capable of until we try. Looking back over this project, it seems near impossible. It just came together with such an amazing group of people. The CMA is just the greatest group of people and everyone helped. Everyone got their artists involved and made this a big deal. I’m really proud of it.

Josh Turner Says Goodbye to Turner Field in Atlanta

Josh Turner Says Goodbye to Turner Field in Atlanta

A lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, Josh Turner attended his final Braves game at Turner Field in Atlanta on Friday night (Sept. 16) as a guest of the Atlanta Braves organization.

After 20 years, the 2016 baseball season will be the final season the Braves play at Turner Field. The team is moving to SunTrust Park located outside of Atlanta. They are scheduled to play their final regular season game at Turner Field on Oct. 2, 2016, against the Detroit Tigers.

The Braves are holding a countdown of the final home games remaining, allowing special guests to tear away the numbers showing how many games are left. Josh had the honor of tearing down the number 9 (see photo above) indicating that there are only eight home games remaining following Friday’s game at Turner Field.

“It was such an honor for me to go the Braves game this past Friday and to pull down the number nine commemorating the nine home games left at Turner Field,” said Josh in a release. “I’ve had so many good memories there. I’ve introduced all my boys to Braves baseball there. We’ve witnessed some great games and we’ve had a lot of fun times.

Turner Field will always be special to me,” he continues. “I never got to go to Fulton County Stadium, so ‘The Ted’ is where I made my first Braves memories. I don’t remember the first game I went to there, but all of my children have had their first experiences there too.”

Josh is currently on the road supporting his latest single, “Hometown Girl.”

Billy Gilman Picks Adam Levine as His “Voice” Coach

Billy Gilman Picks Adam Levine as His “Voice” Coach

After years away from the spotlight, former child country star Billy Gilman burned bright on The Voice last night (Sept. 20).

Billy’s performance of Adele’s “When We Were Young” was impressive enough that all four judges—Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys—swiveled their chairs around in approval.

Billy, 28, shot to stardom in 2000 at the age of 11 when he became the youngest artist to earn a Top 40 hit with his first single, “One Voice,” which eventually peaked at No. 20. Billy released his last studio album in 2006 and had maintained a relatively low profile, until releasing an emotional video in 2014 in which he shared that he was gay.

Adam, who was the first to turn his chair around, jockeyed back and forth with Miley about wanting Billy to join his team, before Billy was forced to make a decision.

“I’ve never been so nervous in my life,” said Billy. “I have to say one thing, one of the biggest impressions, was the moment you [Blake] won your first ACM Award, I believe, and you stomped up those stairs, that image stayed with me until this day. However, I pick Adam.”

Watch Billy Gilman Impress All Four Judges During Blind Auditions on “The Voice”

Former child star Billy Gilman returns to the TV spotlight tonight (Sept. 20) with an appearance on Season 11 of NBC’s The Voice. Billy took part in the show’s blind auditions and received the attention of all four coaches.

In 2000, 11-year-old Billy released the single “One Voice,” which was a Top 20 hit for the youngster from Rhode Island. He later released an album of the same name that reached double-platinum status. Billy left country music after releasing the single “I’ve Changed” in 2009—returning in 2014 with the release of “Say You Will” and the sharing the news that he was gay.

the_voice_billy_gilmanIn his blind audition Billy performed a beautiful rendition of Adele’s “When We Were Young.” Adam Levine was the first coach to hit his button and turn his chair to face Billy, followed by Miley Cyrus, and at the end of the performance both Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton simultaneously hit their buttons to turn around.

“What’s your name, man?” Blake asked Billy. “My name is Billy Gilman,” he replied. “I know Billy,” Blake shared with the other coaches.

“I started out as a young country artist and had great success,” Billy tells the coaches. “To finally be here at a moment where I can finally sing the way I so badly wanted to even then and to finally stand here and be among you—it truthfully is such an honor. ”

Check out a sneak peek of Billy’s blind audition and tune in to The Voice tonight, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. ET to see who Billy picks as his coach.

Jason Aldean Has Ankle-Breaking Crossover Appeal, Third Consecutive No. 1 Album on All-Genre Billboard 200

Jason Aldean Has Ankle-Breaking Crossover Appeal, Third Consecutive No. 1 Album on All-Genre Billboard 200

Jason Aldean may not have been nominated for CMA Entertainer of the Year in 2016or any CMAs for that matter—but his crossover appeal is undeniable. To borrow a bit of basketball parlance: Jason has an ankle-breaking crossover.

In addition to hitting the No. 1 spot on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart this past week, Jason’s They Don’t Know is also the No. 1 album on the all-genre Billboard 200. They Don’t Know marks Jason’s third consecutive album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, following 2014’s Old Boots, New Dirt and 2012’s Night Train.

“Selling albums and people wanting to go buy a full-length album, those days are dwindling fast, man,” says Jason to Nash Country Daily. “It’s unfortunate because as a fan growing up, buying people’s albums, I thought that was great. I couldn’t wait to go buy an album and get home and listen to the songs. Not only the ones that were on the radio, but all the other ones and sit down with my guitar and try to learn how to play all those songs. It’s almost kind of like a lost thing anymore. For me, it’s like if people are going to go out and spend 15 bucks on a record or whatever it is, I want to give them as much as I can give them for 15 bucks, you know.”

They Don’t Know is the first country album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights in August 2015. After the 2015 CMA Awards in November, Chris Stapleton’s Traveller re-entered the chart and stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for two weeks.

“We try to just give them more bang for their buck, I guess,” says Jason about his new 15-song album. “If you’re going to go spend the money on it, we want you to feel like it’s worth it in the end. A lot of times for me it’s hard to narrow it down to 10 songs on a record. There’s songs that I feel like are hits that we’re not able to cut, and so I want to cut as many as I can, too. It’s just kind of something we started doing for a while now and it’s just kind of become the way it is for me. It’s just knowing we’re going to cut 15 songs, and that’s just the way it is.”

You can catch Jason on his current Six String Circus Tour. He also sat down and talked with us about the above topic and more on our The Writers Room podcast.

Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild Reveals New Fall Clothing Line

Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild is one of country music’s most stylish women, so it’s natural that she would create her very own clothing line. In October 2015, Karen launched her collection, fittingly called Fair Child by Karen Fairchild, which is available at evine.com.
