Breaking Down Miranda Lambert’s “Vice” Video…Metaphor by Sweet Metaphor

Breaking Down Miranda Lambert’s “Vice” Video…Metaphor by Sweet Metaphor

Miranda Lambert released the music video to her new single, “Vice,” yesterday (Sept. 7). And boy is it a metaphorical doozy. Hell, it’s a regular ol’ metaphorical promise land—full of wreckage, crossroads and, yup, vices.

I decided to break down the video—frame by frame, metaphor by metaphor—and give you my two cents’ worth. Without further ado, here’s my slanted interpretation of each metaphor. Keep in mind, this isn’t serious.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 12.23.28 PM0:09

Looks like we’ve got a single-car wreck on our hands. We don’t know who is driving yet, but we can assume he or she is an awful driver.

Metaphor: Sometimes you actually have to wreck to slow down. It’s deep, I know.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 12.32.07 PM0:31

It’s our first glimpse of Miranda as she emerges from the wreckage unscathed—and her hair looks amazing.

Metaphor: This woman is a horrible driver. This is by no means a representation of all women.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 12.43.46 PM0:54

During the wreck, Miranda loses a boot. But no worries, she finds it and puts it back on.

Metaphor: After a setback, pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 12.51.09 PM1:11

Miranda leaves the scene of the wreck without calling the police. Her insurance company is going to be pissed.

Metaphor: Don’t sweat the small stuff.

1:34Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 12.57.55 PM

Miranda makes her way to a small town and ditches her fringed jacket.

Metaphor: Fringe is soooo last year in this small town.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 1.03.37 PM1:46

Miranda walks past a woman reading the Daily Gazette—a fine newspaper, if ever there was one.

Metaphor: Chaos is old news.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 1.06.11 PM2:01

Miranda walks through some bubbles that two girls are blowing. Bubbles are nice, aren’t they?

Metaphor: Where are bubbles blown nowadays? Weddings. Naturally, it’s not a stretch to assume Miranda will be getting married soon.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 2.30.07 PM2:09

A blackbird flies by.

Metaphor: In literature, blackbirds can symbolize the unknown. But don’t fret. Miranda has already survived a car wreck. She’s up for a little danger.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 2.35.57 PM2:11

An unnecessary shot of a Star Biscuit Co. advertisement.

Metaphor: Either Miranda has invested in Star Biscuit Co. stock or her future is light and fluffy.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 2.43.36 PM2:15

Miranda walks into a seedy bar where a handsome bartender awaits. She trades her lone earring—did you notice she was only wearing one?—for a smoke and a shot.

Metaphor: In a pinch, an earring is a girl’s best friend.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 2.56.04 PM2:25

Miranda leaves the bar and begins walking out of town. She walks past two roadside crosses.

Metaphor: Death waits for no (wo)man.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 2.55.13 PM

Miranda comes to a crossroads.

Metaphor: Sell your soul to the Devil so you can play guitar like Robert Johnson.

Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 3.04.04 PM3:07

Miranda gets into the backseat of a driverless car and leaves the scene.

Metaphor: Elon Musk is the future.

The End.

Tim and Faith have made a big difference in our city, not only with their music but also with their generous contributions to many important causes. They deserve to join the many other incredible artists on the Music City Walk of Fame, and I’m looking forward to their induction.”

Who’s New: Jarred Pierce

Who’s New: Jarred Pierce

Born: Frog Pond, Ala.
Lives: Nashville
Age: 30
Influences: Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Eric Church
EP: Boys and Arrows  (Sept. 9)

Inside Scoop

Growing up in the small town of Frog Pond, Ala.—which is just south of Muscle Shoals—Jarred Pierce fell in love with two things early in his life: music and the outdoors. His two passions have merged into his career. As an 8-year-old, Jarred began picking the guitar and singing in church. By 16, he was fronting his own band and writing songs. Last year, Jarred made the leap from Frog Pond to Nashville to purse music full-time, and he will release his debut EP, Boys and Arrows, on Sept. 9. In addition, Jarred has partnered with Treezyn Hunting and Outdoor Apparel and is filming his own hunting show, Wicked Ridge Outdoors.

Feeling Froggy

“There’s not much to do in Frog Pond if you don’t love the outdoors. I grew up hunting, fishing, hiking, camping—whatever I could do to be outside. It was a good place to be raised. But I also grew up listening to my mom sing in church and got into music that way. She got me a guitar when I was 8 years old, and I taught myself how to play. My love of music evolved from there.”

Music City Leap

“Once I learned the guitar, I started singing a little bit. When I was 15, me and my friends created our own band in high school. We were always somewhere playing fairs or festivals on the weekends. After high school, we all went our separate ways and I went out solo after that, playing local bars and restaurants and doing acoustic gigs. After a few years, I really started writing and began traveling back and forth to Nashville to get into this scene. I met some great guys that helped me get my career started, and here I am now with my new EP, Boys and Arrows.”

Southern Outlaw Sound

“I grew up loving the Outlaw sound—Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash—and a lot of Southern rock. I think that’s a little of where my sound comes from. Growing up listening to Southern rock and the guys in the Outlaw movement, I think you can hear a little of that on my EP. I also love Eric Church and his sound. I love his lyrics—they’re just so cool to me. In fact, the first date I went on with my wife was at an Eric Church concert. So we go see him at least once a year to celebrate.”

First Impressions

JarredP“I wrote all six songs on the EP. I went through 20 to 30 songs to narrow down the EP to six. It was tough for me, especially because you want your first impression to be your best. But I feel really good about the six on there and what I’ve done writing and growing. It’s a big accomplishment for me. I’m proud of the EP. If fact, one of the songs on the EP, ‘Big Red Bobber,’ is the first song I ever wrote when I was 16. I’ve changed it a little since then, but I had a chance to open for Jana Kramer last week and I got to play this version of it, and I got to see the crowd react. It’s one of those songs I’ve always held on to, and to be able to release it on the EP is so exciting for me.”

Seeing the Forrest for the Treezyn

“Partnering with Treezyn was one of those things that just fit. It my opinion as a hunter, their gear is awesome. There’s been so much they’ve brought to the table for my music career. Their following has transferred to my following. We meshed so well together. They are very to the point. I don’t have to fake anything. They are real and I’m real, it’s just who I am—a hunter and outdoorsman. With Treezyn, we’ve actually started a hunting show called Wicked Ridge Outdoors. We’re doing a lot of filming right now. I’m headed to Georgia next week for a bear hunt with a bow and I’ve got more music dates throughout the fall. That’s going to be fun. Music and hunting, that’s what I love doing.”

Watch American Idol Winner Trent Harmon Perform Live at the Nash Studios

You may know Trent Harmon as the very last winner of FOX’s hit show, American Idol, but we here at Nashcountrydaily.com got to know Trent as one hell of good singer.

The Memphis native stopped by the NashCountryDaily.com offices this afternoon (Sept. 7) for a special Facebook live performance and to show just why he won Season XV of American Idol.

The Season XV winner treated us to songs like Marty Stuart’s “Burn Me Down,” “Falling,” Chris Stapleton’s “What Are You Listening To” “There’s A Girl,” and a hair-raising rendition of Sia’s “Chandelier”—a must see.

Trent said of the Stapleton tune, “That’s my favorite song in the world. It hasn’t been replaced yet. I got to sing it on the show one week, very early in the competition when no one had even sung a country song at all. It was so expected of me to sing country every week that I had to play the game of ‘alright we gotta flip it, I gotta do something to keep people interested in watching the show.’ This particular week they said ‘Pick anything you want.”  I said ‘alright, I gotta do it.’ So I told them what I wanted to do and they said ‘you’re gonna go home because nobody has ever heard of that song.’ I sang the song and no one clapped. No one.”

In addition to Kacey’s Christmas album, which she describes as “part Western Swing sprinkled with bits of classic pop, hazy Hawaiian moments and child-like fun, all coming to a nostalgic and melancholy end,” Chris Young, Brett Eldredge, Jennifer Nettles and Rascal Flatts are slated to drop holiday albums this season.
