Sturgill Simpson Unleashes 2nd Facebook Onslaught . . . Was Just Getting Warmed Up Yesterday

Sturgill Simpson Unleashes 2nd Facebook Onslaught . . . Was Just Getting Warmed Up Yesterday

Sturgill Simpson, much like Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, was “just getting warmed up” yesterday with his initial Facebook post in which in bashed the ACMs, Music Row and “Garden & Gun” magazine.

In an update to his initial Facebook post, Sturgill clarified that he has no problem on a personal level with Miranda Lambert receiving the inaugural ACM Merle Haggard Spirit Award. His disdain is for organizations such as the ACMs and CMAs for his perceived believe in their hypocrisy.

“My point was that all of these organizations don’t walk it like they talk it. I called The ACM out directly because they are simply the latest in a long line of organizations that have done the same since Merle’s death…and even before. Showing homage and handing lifetime achievement awards to the greats of yesterday while claiming to uphold and hold dear the original values and integrity of Country music’s legacy. Yet these are just hollow words…merely empty semantics. One needs only to look glancingly at the majority of the music that they, along with the CMA’s, predominantly choose to recognize and promote at their award shows.”

Sturgill went on to claim that he will be blackballed from the industry, and artists like himself and Jason Isbell will continue to make No. 1 records without the help of the establishment.

“I fully realize that as I type this, meetings and conversations are taking place on music Row to ensure I am blackballed from the industry and that’s perfectly fine with me. Im not sure how you can blackball somebody you don’t acknowledge in the first place anyway. Yet, even though they mostly go out of their way to ignore artists like myself and Jason Isbell, I assure you they are more than aware of our existence. They are also well aware that we don’t need them. Our last albums went to #1 without any help from the Mainstream Country Music establishment…and our next albums will too.

For his part, Jason Isbell chimed in on Twitter, at first blindly agreeing to Sturgill’s statements when asked to comment by a fan. After he read the post, Jason still agreed.

Finally, Sturgill let fans know that—should he be nominated—he won’t be attending this year’s CMA Awards. He’s got a sold-out show in Des Moines. There’s also a rather humorous postscript.

You can read the full post below.

Shortly after I initially posted this it was announced that Miranda Lambert would be the award recipient.
Before people start chasing clickbait by putting words in my mouth I feel the need to clarify that I was not aware of this at the time of my original post and my words were in no way directed at her. I know that Merle liked and respected her so it’s good to see there is at least some blue sky in all of this.

I don’t know Miranda nor have I ever met her but something tells me that in her heart, she knows I’m dead on. I am also aware that the ACM is a West Coast organization originally created to recognize West Coast artists like Merle and they have handed Merle many trophies over the years,..even in the last 15 or so mind you. It’s also worth noting that the last one was handed to him by none other than Miranda Lambert herself.
But all of this is irrelevant as none of it has anything to do with the original point I was trying to make. My point was that all of these organizations don’t walk it like they talk it. One needs only to look glancingly at the majority of the music that they, along with the CMA’s, predominantly choose to recognize and promote at their award shows.

I fully realize that as I type this, meetings and conversations are taking place on music Row to ensure I am blackballed from the industry and that’s perfectly fine with me. With that said, I have no more need to make enemies with these people than I have a need to be their friends. If anything I’m trying to help them. Because more and more everyday, people are waking up to the situation and they are pissed. Perhaps Country Music, especially Nashville, should wake up too before it’s too late.

I should also go ahead and add here that whether or not I am nominated for a CMA award this year, I will not be attending the ceremony for no other reason than the fact I already have a sold out show scheduled in Des Moines, Iowa on the night of the awards ceremony and I have no plans to change that.

Mostly though, I just wish Merle was still alive.
I’d love for them to all hear his thoughts on the matter.

P.S. [F**k] this town. I’m moving.

Kane Brown Answers 12 Off-the-Wall Questions

Kane Brown Answers 12 Off-the-Wall Questions

If you have not heard of Kane Brown yet, get your head in the game. The 22-year-old singer from Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., has been making a name for himself in country music over the last year.

With his debut EP, Chapter 1, spawning songs like “Used to Love You Sober” and “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” Kane has shown he’s more than just a Youtube and Facebook star. His current single, “Thunder in the Rain,” the first from his upcoming album, is burning up the iTunes charts.

“It’s got a real drive to it,” Kane tells Nash Country Daily. “It’s about two unstoppable forces in a relationship. Nothing is going to come in between them. I feel like it’s just a fun song to drive to and roll your windows down and just jam out to.”

The Georgia native stopped by the Nash Country Daily studios for a chat, and we threw a couple of off-the-wall questions at the newcomer to get to know him a little bit better.

NCD: What’s the last picture you took on your iPhone?

Kane Brown: A selfie.

NCD: Have you ever been in a car accident?

KB: Yeah. My aunt . . . This is actually a funny story. I was like 9 years old and it was Thanksgiving and we were all going to my Mamaw’s house to eat. [My aunt] was on her phone, texting and driving. She pulled over into the grass, it’s like a five-lane highway. She pulled over into the grass, and I was like, “Tiffany,” and she realized she was in the grass. She ripped it back over. It was raining, so we started hydroplaning through the whole interstate. Luckily, there were no cars. There were no cars in sight. We ended up hitting in the ditch and we just knocked a sign over. I remember it clear as day. I was not hurt. I didn’t even feel it. But there was this big CD case—she had like 600 in this case, and it fell on my foot. I was huge into baseball and stuff, so the drama queen I am, I’m like, “Ow! My foot! My baseball career is over!” That’s what they’ve teased me with for the rest of my life.

NCD: What’s your perfect pizza?

KB: Pepperoni.

NCD: Who’s your hero?

KB: I’d say my mom. Actually, my mom and my Nana. My mom, just because she’s a single mother, and we went through a lot of hard times. She could of easily just got rid of me. Not like that, but you know what I mean, up for adoption or something. We even lived in a car for a while, and she fed me Cheerios and stuff. We got through hard times, so I’d say my mom. Then, my Nana for taking me in, when my mom couldn’t actually take care of me.

NCD: What would be one or two things that would surprise fans to know about you?

KB: I can never walk on the floor without socks on. I just always have socks on. I feel like it’s weird just touching the floor with my feet. And I can play medium on Guitar Hero with my feet. I got to where I could play almost everything on expert and then, I was like, “You know what, I’ve never seen anybody play with their feet before,” so I started playing with my feet.

NCD: What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep?

KB: I want to say, like three days. I used to be a game nerd.

NCD: What’s your favorite word?

KB: I say “gewd” a lot.

NCD: Is that like “good?”

KB: No, it’s like, just being a smart-ass. It’s like, “Oh, you are gewd.” If you’re bad at something. It’s like, “You are gewd.”

NCD:  If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?

KB: I don’t know, probably just drag race or go mudding in the truck.

NCD: Is there a song that’s stuck in your head that you just can’t get out right now?

KB: “Thunder in the Rain.” No, I’m just kidding [laughing]. This is going to sound weird, but I like the song “Needed Me” by Rihanna. That’s probably one that’s stuck in my head right now.

NCD: Who’s your favorite football team?

KB: I’ve got two colleges, Georgia and Kansas State. My NFL team is the Carolina Panthers.

NCD: What’s your go-to karaoke song?

KB: “Getting You Home” by Chris Young.

NCD:  If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

KB: Pizza.

Sturgill Simpson’s Facebook Post Bashes the ACMs, Music Row and “Garden & Gun”

Sturgill Simpson’s Facebook Post Bashes the ACMs, Music Row and “Garden & Gun”

In a lengthy Facebook post today (Aug. 29), Sturgill Simpson unleashed a powerful diatribe against the ACMs, Music Row and Garden & Gun magazine.

Sturgill’s main bone of contention stems from the fact that the ACMs created the inaugural Merle Haggard Spirit Award, saying “I find it utterly disgusting the way everybody on Music Row is coming up with any reason they can to hitch their wagon to [Merle Haggard’s] name while knowing full and damn well what he thought about them.”

Sturgill also took the opportunity to bash Garden & Gun magazine for slighting him from a scheduled cover with Merle for their April/May issue. Instead, the magazine featured Chris Stapleton on the cover, which drew these comments from Sturgill: “But then at the last minute, the magazine’s editor put Chris Stapleton on the cover without telling anyone until they had already gone to print. Don’t get me wrong, Chris had a great year and deserves a million magazine covers…but thats not the point. Its about keeping your word and ethics. Chris also knows this as he called me personally to express his disgust at the situation. Dude’s a class act. The editor later claimed in a completely [bullsh*t] email apology to both Merle’s publicist and ours (Chris and I share the same publicist) that they didn’t get any good shots that day.”

Check out the full Facebook post below (a few bracketed words have been edited for profanity):

Many years back, much like Willie and Waylon had years before, Merle Haggard said, “[F**k] this town. I’m moving.” and he left Nashville.

According to my sources, it was right after a record executive told him that “Kern River” was a bad song. In the last chapter of his career and his life, Nashville wouldn’t call, play, or touch him. He felt forgotten and tossed aside. I always got a sense that he wanted one last hit..one last proper victory lap of his own, and we all know deserved it. Yet it never came. And now he’s gone.

Im writing this because I want to go on record and say I find it utterly disgusting the way everybody on Music Row is coming up with any reason they can to hitch their wagon to his name while knowing full and damn well what he thought about them.

If the ACM wants to actually celebrate the legacy and music of Merle Haggard, they should drop all the formulaic cannon fodder [bullsh*t] they’ve been pumping down rural America’s throat for the last 30 years along with all the high school pageantry, meat parade award show [bullsh*t] and start dedicating their programs to more actual Country Music.

While Im venting about the unjust treatment of a bonafide American music legend, I should also add, if for no other reasons than sheer principal and to get the taste I’ve been choking back for months now out of my mouth, that Merle was supposed to be on the cover of Garden & Gun magazine’s big Country Music issue (along with myself) a few months back.

They reached out to both of us in October of last year while I was on a west coast tour. Merle was home off the road so I took a day off and traveled up to Redding.

He was so excited about it and it goes without saying that I was completely beside myself along with my Grandfather who has always been a HUGE Merle fan. We spent the whole day of the interview visiting in his living room with our families and had a wonderful conversation with the journalist. Then we spent about two hours outside being photographed by a brilliant and highly respected photographer named David McClister until Merle had enough…he was still recovering from a recent bout of double pneumonia at the time and it was a bit cold that day on the ranch.

But then at the last minute, the magazine’s editor put Chris Stapleton on the cover without telling anyone until they had already gone to print. Don’t get me wrong, Chris had a great year and deserves a million magazine covers…but thats not the point.
Its about keeping your word and ethics.

Chris also knows this as he called me personally to express his disgust at the situation. Dude’s a class act.
The editor later claimed in a completely [bullsh*t] email apology to both Merle’s publicist and ours (Chris and I share the same publicist) that they didn’t get any good shots that day.

David McClister..
2 hour shoot..
no good photos..
OK buddy,..whatever you say.

Anyway, Merle passed away right after it came out.

Some days, this town and this industry have a way of making we wish I could just go sit on Mars and build glass clocks.

Taylor Swift Reports to Jury Duty Like a Normal Person (Not Someone Who Made $170 Million Last Year)

The 6th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees all persons accused of a crime the right to a speedy trial. The Constitution, however, says nothing about the right to a Swift trial…a Taylor Swift trial.

Taylor was conspicuously absent from last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, but this morning (Aug. 29), she was present for jury duty in Nashville, although she was later dismissed. Check out the tweets below.

Tim McGraw Reflects on His Oldest Daughter Heading Back To College

Tim McGraw Reflects on His Oldest Daughter Heading Back To College

It’s that time of year when kids start going back to school and leave the nest as they head off to college. It can be a difficult time for parents, and Tim McGraw is no exception.

Tim’s oldest daughter, Gracie, moved out of the Hill-McGraw family home last fall as she began her college career, and Tim has bittersweet feelings about the coming-of-age decision.

“It’s beautiful and it’s sad all at one time,” said Tim. “You know, you can’t wait for them to sort of see what they make of themselves and do with themselves when they get out from under your umbrella, but you’re also nervous and sad because you’re gonna miss ’em.

“And it was challenging for sure, but you know, we have a lot of confidence in her. I’m a huge fan of hers, not only as an artist, but as a person. She’s just a great, great kid and brings such a light and energy to everything that she does.”

Tim and Faith Hill are the parents to three daughters—Gracie, Maggie and Audrey—so they’ll no doubt have to go through this transition two more times. Good luck!

Gracie can be heard singing with her dad on the song “Here Tonight” on Tim’s current album, Damn Country Music.
