KY Mother Arrested After Child Dies at Children’s Hospital

Bell County, KY (WOKI) A Bell County, Kentucky woman is behind bars after being linked to the death of her child.

Twenty-one year old Erica Lawson of Mt. Vernon was arrested Sunday night following the death of her 17-month-old child at Children’s Hospital in Knoxville. The baby had been flown to the hospital Friday night with severe injuries consistent with physical and sexual abuse; medical staff tried to stabilize the baby, but the child did not survive.

An investigation into the death of the little girl lead police to charge Lawson with manslaughter, failure to report child abuse, criminal abuse and wanton endangerment. Police say they expect to make another arrest in the case soon.

Lawson was taken to the Bell County Detention Center.

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) UPDATE: One person is dead and another injured following a crash in West Knoxville Monday afternoon.

Knoxville Police Department officials say officers responded around 2:00 p.m. to the crash on I-40 East near Western Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a small truck crashed in the grassy area near the intersection of Western Avenue and Dale Avenue; the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Per their investigation thus far, police believe the truck was traveling on I-40 East when it went off the road and struck a tree. They say the reason is currently unknown.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released.

Seymour, TN (WOKI) One person is dead following a house fire early Monday morning in Seymour.

Seymour Volunteer Fire Department officials report that firefighters arrived at the house off Chapman Highway near Floyd’s Market around 4:04 a.m. to find heavy fire and smoke. They say crews made an interior attack to put out the flames but that the absence of hydrants in the area made fighting the blaze difficult.

Crews found one victim dead inside the home. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are investigating the fire.

The victim’s identity and cause of death have not yet been released.

Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Sevier County Fire and Rescue also helped in putting out the blaze.

An Investigation is Underway Following Possible Lightning Strike Causes House Fire in Powell

The Knox County Fire Investigation Unit is looking into a house fire in Powell which is believed to have started by a lightning strike.

Rural Metro Fire Crews called to the scene Saturday night after a Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the fire around the same time neighbors reported heavy lightning in the area.

Crews found fire coming from the the attic and everyone inside made it out safe with no injuries reported.

An injured hiker is rescued the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Tennessee Army National Guard performed the emergency rescue near Inspiration Point along the Alum Cave trail Friday night.

The hiker was suffering head trauma and needed immediate evacuation to the hospital.

TEMA approved the rescue while GSMNP rangers performed first aid until the Blackhawk helicopter arrived and the hiker put into a stretcher and pulled into the copter and taken to UT Medical Center.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a dead body found in West Knoxville.

A jogger found the body just off the roadway in the 11 thousand 200 block of South Northshore. KCSO confirmed the woman found Sunday was deceased and her body was taken to the Knox County Regional Forensics Center where an autopsy will be performed.

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) If you have tickets to see country band The Chicks at Thompson-Boling Arena Saturday night (July 29), you’ll need to make alternate plans.

The Chicks have announced that they are rescheduling their Knoxville and Nashville shows due to illness. The announcement coming just after 3:00 Friday afternoon.

The Knoxville concert will be held at Thompson-Boling on Thursday, Sept. 21, with the Nashville concert at the Bridgestone Arena to follow on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Chicks say all original tickets will be honored at the rescheduled performances.

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) An employee of a gas station in Fountain City is lucky to be alive following a robbery Thursday afternoon.

Knoxville Police Department officials say officers responded to the Sunoco at 5606 Broadway around 4:30 p.m. They say the victim, an employee of the store, reported that two different white men came in, one of whom said he was going to buy two vapes.

KPD says after the victim placed the vapes on the counter, the man grabbed them and ran out the door. KPD reports one of the suspects brandished a gun at the victim when the victim chased after the two men for stealing.

The two men then ran towards Skate Town, leaving the scene on foot. An investigation is underway.

BCSO Investigating Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash in Louisville

Louisville, TN (WOKI) An investigation is underway after a fatal crash Thursday, July 27 in Blount County.

Blount County Sheriff’s Office officials say deputies responded to the single-vehicle crash in the 4200 block of Miser Station Road in Louisville around 7:00 p.m.

The BCSO says a 22-year-old man, who was riding in the vehicle, was killed, while the 17-year-old male driver was injured.

The identities of the individuals involved has not yet been released.
