STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fantastic pitching and a late rally, capped by a Drew Gilbert home run, helped the top-ranked Vols secure a series victory on the road, winning 4-3 over Mississippi State Friday night at Dudy Noble Field.

Tennessee (48-7, 24-5 SEC) used a three-run eighth inning to propell itself to victory, scoring all three runs with two outs in the frame. It started with a double from Luc Lipcius to the gap in right center. Jordan Beck followed that with an RBI single to left field before Gilbert delivered his heroic blast, a two-run go-ahead drive to the opposite field that just did escape the glove of Mississippi State left fielder Brad Cumbest.

The Vols offensive output was set up by a clutch and masterful relief outing from Blade Tidwell. Tidwell, who entered for Chase Burns in the seventh, came on with two runs already home and a runner on second with no outs. He proceeded to strike out three batters, two swinging and one looking, to keep the deficit at 3-1 and allow the Vols to go ahead just a half inning later.

Tidwell earned his second victory of the season and retired all nine batters he faced. The sophomore struck out five in three innings of work, primarily on an explosive fastball that topped out at 99 mph in the final pitch of the game.

Burns, starting after coming on in relief last week, posted a strong night for the Vols. The freshman from Gallatin, Tenn. went six-plus innings and allowed three runs. The right hander had allowed only one run through the first six frames, but gave up three-straight hits to start the seventh.

Mississippi State (26-29, 9-20 SEC) struck first on a solo home run from Hunter Hines to lead off the second. The strong start from Burns was matched by Bulldog starter Preston Johnson who, in similar fashion to Burns, turned in a terrific effort, but late runs spelled the end of his evening. The junior went 7.2 innings and tossed 113 pitches. The late offense touched up the right hander to the tune of four earned runs.

Seth Stephenson delivered the first clutch hit of the day, roping a single to center field to score Evan Russell. Russell jumpstarted the fifth-inning offense with a double to the wall in left.

UP NEXT: The Volunteers round out the weekend series and close the regular season facing Mississippi State in the series finale at 2 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET on SEC Network+.

NOTABLE

WORKING THE LONG BALL: Tennessee homered in its eighth consecutive game this season. The Vols have hit home runs in eight consecutive games five different times this year.

A DOZEN DUBS: Blade Tidwell earned his 12th career victory in the win. It was his longest perfect outing of the season as he fired a clean inning against Tennessee Tech on April 12.

ELEVENTH ALL-TIME: With the lone home run in the game, the Vols have now hit 130 big flies this season. That number ranks 11th in Division I history for team homers in a single-season. Tennessee is averaging 2.36 long balls per game, the fourth-best total in Division I NCAA history.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked and 11th-seeded Tennessee softball team took down Campbell 9-1 in six innings to open its showing at the 2022 NCAA Knoxville Regional Friday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols out-hit the Fighting Camels 11-3 for the game, headlined by a three-hit night for Kiki Milloy to open NCAA Tournament action.

A junior outfielder from Woodinville, Washington, Milloy led all players with three base knocks and two stolen bases for her third three-hit game and fifth multi-steal outing of the season. Freshman McKenna Gibson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a solo homer, while sophomore Zaida Puni drove in game-high three RBIs for the Big Orange.

Senior right-hander Ashley Rogers faced the minimum through three solid innings of relief, dealing six strikeouts on the way to her 11th win of the season. The fourth-year pitcher has totaled 58 career wins in the circle, breaking a tie with Caylan Arnold and Stephanie Humphrey for the seventh most career pitching victories in Tennessee history.

Campbell ace and 2022 Big South Tournament MVP Georgeanna Barefoot was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs, nine runs, 11 hits and seven walks.

Tennessee (40-16) threatened early, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the first after Milloy and Lair Beautae led off with back-to-back singles. Barefoot escaped the jam, working three-straight outs with a strikeout, fielder’s choice and groundout to end the inning.

The Fighting Camels (37-18) struck first in the top of the second when senior Kayla Fredenhall crushed her third home run of the season, launching a leadoff solo shot to center that put CU ahead 1-0.

UT grabbed the lead in the bottom half, plating four unearned runs with two outs on the board. Kelcy Leach opened the scoring, coming home on a failed pickoff attempt by the Campbell catcher after leading the frame off with a double to the right center gap. Puni stepped into the batter’s box with the bases loaded and cleared them off with a single up the middle, scoring Beautae, Milloy and Rylie West to provide a 4-1 lead for the Big Orange.

Gibson added a run for Tennessee in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with an opposite-field solo shot to the bleachers in right center for her 11th long ball of the season. The Lady Vols tacked on three more in the fifth, with West coming home on a wild pitch before Milloy knocked her third hit of the night to left field for a two-run single that increased UT’s lead to 8-1 through five.

Needing one more run to lock up the win in the sixth, Tennessee loaded the bases once again following back-to-back singles from Ashley Morgan and Madison Webber and a walk drawn by West. Almost 12 hours after walking across the stage to receive her master’s degree, super senior outfielder Amanda Ayala was walked on four pitches to bring in her classmate Morgan and end the game.

With the victory, Tennessee secured its 19th consecutive full season with 40-plus victories. UT also picked up its 79th win in NCAA Tournament play and 47th win in the regional round.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols will face a quick turnaround, taking on Oregon State in the winner’s bracket on Saturday at noon. The matchup will be televised on SEC Network.

D.J. Jefferson Signs with Tennessee Basketball

D.J. Jefferson Signs with Tennessee Basketball

Four-star guard D.J. Jefferson has signed with the Tennessee basketball program following a visit to Knoxville last weekend, head coach Rick Barnes announced Friday.

A native of Richardson, Texas, the 6-5 Jefferson attends Minnesota Preparatory Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is rated as the nation’s No. 45 prospect in the Class of 2022 by On3 and No. 73 nationally by 247sports.

“D.J. is a lot of fun to be around,” Barnes said. “He’s got an engaging personality and infectious positive energy. That energy really translates to the basketball court. He’s an exciting player in transition who loves getting out in the open court. D.J. is also a high-level defender with big shoulders and a long wingspan. I think Tennessee fans will love getting to know him and watching him compete.”

Jefferson initially signed with Tulsa in November but was released and reopened his recruitment following a coaching change. His stock rose significantly after an impressive showing at the Iverson Classic last month in Memphis.

Prior to that, he averaged 16.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game as a senior at Minnesota Prep. As a junior in 2020-21, Jefferson ascended in the national recruiting rankings after showcasing his offensive abilities with a 22.0-points-per-game scoring average.

Believed to be the first-ever Tennessee basketball from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Jefferson played his AAU ball with the Howard Pulley Panthers of the Nike EYBL.

Jefferson joins incoming guard B.J. Edwards and forward Julian Phillips as UT’s prep signees in the Class of 2022. The Vols have also added graduate transfer guard Tyreke Key from Indiana State.

Florida Georgia Line‘s Tyler Hubbard‘s debut solo single is out now.

While “5 Foot 9” is inspired by his wife Hayley, Tyler admits he got one thing wrong in the song, “Well I got to be honest, I have a confession, I missed it by an inch. She’s actually 5’10”. I went home that night and said, ‘Babe, remind again how tall you are? You’re about 5’9″, right?’ She said, ‘yeah, I’m 5′ 10″.’ And I thought, well, here’s a new song I wrote, today, I’m sorry I cut you short by an inch, but hope you like it.'”

Elle King & Dierks Bentley Take a Shot at the Wild West for Their New Music Video

Elle King recently topped the country music airplay chart with Miranda Lambert and their smash hit “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home).”

Elle is now following it up with another duet…this time with Dierks Bentley, and “Worth A Shot.”

This isn’t the first time Elle and Dierks have joined forces musically – Elle was a part of Dierks’ number-one song “Different For Girls” back in 2016.

Elle says “Dierks took a chance and brought me into the country world. I couldn’t make my own country record, which is my favorite album I’ve ever made, without including the person who gave me a seat at the table.”

She adds, “To be honest, Dierks and I just have fun no matter what we do, especially singing and performing great songs. This song is all about trying to get back to the beginning of something, and so it’s only right that we go back to where it all started for me.”
