Naomi Judd’s Life Celebrated by the Country Music Community at the Ryman Auditorium

Naomi Judd’s Life Celebrated by the Country Music Community at the Ryman Auditorium

Naomi Judd‘s life was celebrated at the Ryman Auditorium with the CMT special Naomi Judd: A River of Time – Celebration.

The evening started with Naomi’s daughter Ashley Judd greeting the crowd at the Ryman, “Welcome to the mother church of country music. This is where mom wanted her public celebration to take place.”

Ashley also thanked the people that attended the celebration, “Thank you for being in community, and in fellowship with us…because we can pretend to care, but we cannot pretend to show up. So, thank you for showing up for our mom.”

Ashley big sister Wynonna then took the stage for the first performance of the evening – visibly emotional she first commented “How appropriate…the mother church.” Then Wynonna started with the song “River Of Time.”

Little Big Town was also at the Ryman to honor Naomi.

Before they sang The Judd‘s “Grandpa” LBT’s Karen Fairchild shared, “To Ashley, Wy and the whole family…our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your music has been the fabric of our lives, and Naomi, it will live with us forever. So, thank you for…it’s a great honor just to be on this stage with you all tonight.”

Emmylou Harris & Allison Russell performed “The Sweetest Gift” during the celebration.

Wynonna Judd was joined by Brandi Carlile on “The Rose”

Wynonna also performed “Love Can Build A Bridge”

During the evening Wynonna also shared with the audience at the Ryman and those watching at home that The Final Tour which is planned for the Fall will go on.

Wy said, “So, I made a decision…I’m gonna have to honor her and do this tour.”

The audience at the Ryman validated Wynonna’s choice with a explosion of applause at the announcement.

Wynonna added, “The show must go on…as hard as it may be.”

The final performance of The Judds also aired on CMT just over a month ago during the CMT Music Awards.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A five-run seventh inning from Georgia proved to be the difference, as No. 1/1 Tennessee fell in the series finale Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, 8-3.

Drew Gilbert recorded his 15th multi-hit game of the season and Luc Lipcius homered for the second consecutive day, and 13th time this season, but the Vols (45-7, 22-5 SEC) managed to get just five total hits.

On the mound, Ben Joyce got his first career start—striking out six batters in 4.0 innings of work and threw all 44 of his fastballs over 100 mph, clocking 20 over 103 mph, according to Yakkertech tracking. Kirby Connell took over for Joyce, retiring all six batters he faced striking out a career-high-tying five in two innings of work in the fifth and sixth.

For the first six innings of the game Saturday, Georgia recorded just three runs on three total hits—all of which came in the fourth inning.

With the game tied 3-3 entering the top of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs quickly loaded the bases with three straight singles.

An RBI groundout by Ben Anderson brought home one run and was immediately followed by a two-out RBI single by Cole Tate that scored two more. The next batter, Connor Tate, hit a two-run home run to left field to cap off Georgia’s five-run inning and give the Bulldogs an 8-3 lead.

Following its offensive explosion in the seventh, Georgia (33-18, 14-13) retired Tennessee’s final nine batters to close out the game.

Despite its finish, the Vols got off to a hot start on the offensive end on Saturday, plating one run in the first and second innings.

Gilbert drove in Seth Stephenson in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle, while Lipcius’ solo homer to left field highlighted the second inning and gave Tennessee a 2-0 lead.

Georgia’s other offensive production came in a three-run fourth inning in which Chaney Rogers and Fernando Gonzalez hit back-to-back home runs to put the Bulldogs in front 3-2. The Vols evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Cortland Lawson drew a bases loaded walk.

UP NEXT: Tennessee is back at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for one final time in the regular season on Tuesday, taking on Belmont at 6 p.m. Tickets are sold out, but standing room only tickets will be on sale starting 90 minutes before first pitch. The game will air on SEC Network+.

Tennessee Baseball Wins 2022 SEC Regular-Season Title; 1st since 1995

Tennessee Baseball Wins 2022 SEC Regular-Season Title; 1st since 1995

The top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers clinched the fourth outright Southeastern Conference regular-season championship in program history—its first since 1995—after Tennessee defeated Georgia, 9-2, and Vanderbilt beat Arkansas, 9-6, in extra innings Friday night.

Under the direction of Coach of the Year candidate Tony Vitello and his incredible staff, the Volunteers have displayed excellence from the very start of SEC action, sweeping the first four series of conference play, including series on the road at then-No. 1 Ole Miss and then-No. 3 Vanderbilt. When UT finally suffered its first conference setback, a home loss to Alabama 13 games into league play, the Vols responded with a six-game conference win streak, highlighted by a sweep of Florida in Gainesville, courtesy of late heroics at the plate by Christian Moore and a fabulous play from Christian Scott to end the extra-innings series finale.

Tennessee opened the SEC season 18-1, the best start to begin conference play of any team in the history of SEC baseball. The Volunteers surpassed their own record, a 16-1 start from the 1951 College World Series team, which was the first year the Vols won the SEC crown.

The Volunteers dominated league play with an elite mix of incredible hitting and excellent pitching. Tennessee has already crushed the program record of 108 single-season home runs, smashing 122 as of Friday.

On the mound, the Big Orange arms have been extraordinary in a multitude of ways. From starting pitching to the bullpen, high-leverage situations to shutting it down late, the Vol arms have gotten it done. The staff leads the nation with a 2.25 ERA and has accumulated 559 punchouts across 459 innings, while surrendering just 120 walks.

Tennessee’s loaded starting rotation of pitchers Drew BeamChase BurnsChase Dollander and Blade Tidwell have collected a 23-2 record. Add in southpaw Zander Sechrist, who has been the primary midweek starter, and the Volunteer rotation owns a 27-2 record with a 2.26 ERA and a WHIP of 0.90.

The stable of bullpen arms has proved just as impressive as any other unit on the team. Tennessee’s bullpen holds a 2.19 ERA over 226 innings with a 18-4 record and has 281 strikeouts. 13 pitchers who have come on in relief hold an ERA under 3.00 while a six-man core of arms, who each have over 20 appearances, individually own sub-2.60 ERAs. Fireballer Ben Joyce has been a sight to be seen, lighting up the radar gun with each outing, but crafty Redmond Walsh is just two saves away from the program record in career saves. Mark McLaughlinKirby ConnellWill Mabrey and Camden Sewell have also enjoyed incredible successes out of the Tennessee bullpen.

Ten players on the club that have played more than 30 games this season are batting better than .300, while the team has posted a .307 average and a slugging percentage of .603. Trey Lipscomb, an SEC Player of the Year candidate, has had a breakout season manning the hot corner, leading the team in hits (67), runs (55), homers (20), RBIs (70) and total bases (147). The senior leads the entire conference in home runs, RBIs and total bases – all this after recording only 17 hits in his first three years on Rocky Top.

Lipscomb highlights a collective effort of Tennessee’s order to score early and score often. Jordan BeckJorel Ortega and Drew Gilbert each have more than 50 hits on the year and are posting career seasons entering postseason play. Beck has mashed 13 home runs and driven in 46 RBIs, while Ortega has 11 big flies of his own. Gilbert, batting in the cleanup spot, has driven in 47 runners, the second-highest total on the squad, and has delivered 23 extra base hits this year.

The big boppers of East Tennessee, in total, have six players with double-digit homers. Joining Lipscomb, Beck and Ortega are Luc Lipcius (12), Evan Russell (12) and Cortland Lawson (10).

Tennessee enters the final weekend of the regular season as the No. 1 RPI team in the country and is vying for its highest NCAA Championship seed in program history, looking to return to Omaha for a second straight season and the sixth time in program history.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – An offensive explosion in the middle innings propelled No. 1/1 Tennessee past No. 22/NR Georgia Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, as the Vols clinched their final home weekend series of the year with a 9-2 win.

The win also clinched at least a share of the SEC regular season title for Tennessee (45-6, 22-4 SEC). The Vols can claim the outright title with a win in Saturday’s series finale against Georgia.

After being held scoreless through the first three innings, Tennessee erupted for eight total runs in the next three innings, while allowing just one Georgia run after the Bulldogs’ second batter of the day, in the top of the first, hit a solo home run.

For the second game in a row, a Tennessee player hit two home runs—this time Evan Russell. The graduate senior had a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to give the Vols the lead and then a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Jorel Ortega was also active on the offensive end, recording three hits and driving in three runs—one apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

On the mound, Camden Sewell (5-1) was credited with the win for Tennessee after logging three innings of work as the first Vol out of the bullpen. Blade Tidwell got the start for Tennessee, struggling early, but recovering to finish with a final line of four innings pitched, four hits surrendered, one run given up and six strikeouts.

Mark McLaughlin and Kirby Connell finished off the game for the Vols, each going an inning, and allowing zero combined hits in the final two innings.

Following its quiet start in the first three innings, Tennessee’s offense came alive with a three-run fourth inning to take a lead it would not surrender for the rest of the night.

Trailing 1-0 after Georgia’s early home run, Jorel Ortega drove in the Vols’ first run of the game with a double down the left line—scoring Trey Lipscomb all the way from first base. Two batters later, Russell blasted a two-run homer over the left field porches to give Tennessee a 3-1 lead.

After Georgia plated one run in the top of the fifth by drawing a bases loaded walk, the Vols once again answered in the bottom of the inning. Luc Lipcius kick-started Tennessee’s three-run inning with a leadoff home run that sailed over the wall in right center.

Four batters later, a single from Ortega scored Drew Gilbert from second base and after Blake Burke followed Ortega’s RBI up with a single of his own, Cortland Lawson drew a bases loaded walk to extend Tennessee’s lead to 6-2.

Following its back-to-back three-run innings, Tennessee added three more runs in its next two frames—two in the sixth and one in the seventh—to extend its lead to 9-2.

Ortega drove in his third run of the day with a single through the right side in the sixth, immediately followed by Jordan Beck scoring on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Russell tacked on his second homer of the evening to close out Tennessee’s scoring for the evening.

UP NEXT: The Vols go for the sweep over the Bulldogs in the series finale Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium at 1 p.m. Tickets are sold out, but standing room only tickets will be on sale starting 90 minutes before first pitch. The game will air on SEC Network+.

RUSSELL APPROACHES HOME RUN CROWN: With his two-home run performance on Friday, Evan Russell increased his career home run total to 37—moving into a tie for second place in program history with Doug Hecker (1990-92). Russell needs just one more home run to tie Todd Helton for the career home run program record.

RUSSELL MOVES UP GAMES PLAYED LIST: In addition to his ascension on the career home runs list, Friday marked Evan Russell’s 220th game as a Vol, giving him sole possession of second place for career games played in program history. Pete Derkay (2017-21) holds the program record with 229 career games played.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In a game that spanned more than four hours from start to finish, No. 10 Tennessee softball was eliminated in Friday’s SEC Tournament semifinals by a score of 3-0 against No. 22 Missouri. The Tigers knocked three solo home runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to advance to the SEC championship game at the University of Florida’s Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Tennessee (39-16) out-hit its opponent 6-4 for the contest as Kiki MilloyLair BeautaeIvy DavisAshley MorganKelcy Leach and Amanda Ayala recorded one single each for the Big Orange. Graduate lefty Erin Edmoundson held Mizzou (36-18) to four hits in 6.1 innings pitched, but all four went for extra bases as she was tagged with the loss and three earned runs.

Despite recording back-to-back base hits in both the second and third innings, the Lady Vols were unable to push a run across in the early going. UT put a runner on in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but left five runners stranded for the game and was ultimately shut out for just the second time this season.

After Edmoundson worked through three scoreless innings, Missouri built a 2-0 lead with solo homers in the top of the fourth and fifth frames. Fifth-year players Kimberly Wert and Hatti Moore each went yard for the Tigers before the game entered a weather delay at 4:23 p.m. in the top of the fifth with two outs. Two hours and 33 minutes later, Edmoundson got out of the fifth with a flyout to left.

The Tigers tacked on their third run of the night in top of the seventh when freshman Kara Daly went yard with a one-out solo blast to left field. Leach had a Lady Vol rally on her mind in the bottom half after ripping a one-out single down the left field line, but a strikeout and a groundout to third ended the ballgame.

Junior right-hander Jordan Weber went the distance for Missouri to collect her 15th win of the year. She spun seven scoreless innings with six hits allowed and one strikeout.

UP NEXT: NCAA Tournament action begins next weekend with regional play at 16 institutional host sites. The selection show is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
