KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kellie Harper reconnected with a respected and trusted colleague for her latest hire at Tennessee, announcing Bryan Tatum as the director of basketball sports performance for the Lady Vols.

Tatum has spent the past seven years as an assistant athletic performance coach at Auburn, working with the Tiger football team. He replaces Tyler Watson, who departed UT to accept a sports performance position with the St. John’s University men’s basketball program.

Harper and Tatum worked together previously at two stops along her coaching path. He was on her staff from 2008-10 at Western Carolina and provided his expertise at NC State from 2011-13.

“I am very happy to welcome Bryan Tatum and his family to the Lady Vol program,” Harper said. “I know that Bryan will continue the strong culture in our weight room that Tyler built and push our players to be the best they can be and to compete for championships.

“Bryan is a passionate, hard-working and intelligent coach with high character who connects well with student-athletes. He is extremely competitive and is already asking where we will hang our next championship banner. I am excited for him to get started.”

Joining the Auburn football staff in 2014, Tatum possesses 15 years of collegiate coaching experience with a mindset of growth and development meshed with a slight-edge philosophy. That viewpoint, which holds that “consistently repeated daily actions, plus time, equal unconquerable results,” comes from the book “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson.

“I am really excited to be part of the incredible legacy of Lady Vol basketball,” Tatum said. “It doesn’t feel real yet. It gives me chills to think about having some part of building onto that tradition, adding to the culture and empowering young women to unlock their potential and to not only be successful on the court but in life as well.

“My first full-time job was working with Kellie and Jon, and I have so much respect for them. They are as good as it gets, and I look forward to working alongside them and Casi (Dailey) again, the entire staff and a terrific group of student-athletes.”

Tatum arrived at Auburn from NC State, where he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for three years from 2011-14, working with women’s basketball, wrestling, men’s and women’s golf, and rifle.

Prior to his time in Raleigh, he was the assistant strength and conditioning coordinator at Western Carolina (2008-2010), assisting with football and coordinating women’s basketball, women’s soccer, softball, volleyball, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, track and field and cheerleading.

Tatum spent two years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coordinator at Western Kentucky (2006-2008), assisting with football while coordinating men’s and women’s soccer. He completed a master’s degree in exercise physiology from WKU in 2008.

He played football at West Liberty (W. Va.) State College and earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology with a minor in physical therapy in 2005. A team captain as a junior and senior, he was part of the 2000 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions. In 2002, he was an All-WVIAC selection at defensive back.

Following graduation, Tatum completed an internship at Notre Dame before returning to his alma mater as a strength and conditioning coach while also serving as an assistant football and co-head track and field coach.

Tatum holds a number of professional certifications, including RSCC, CSCS, USAW, USATF, ISSC, SAQ, FMS, CES, MAT, RPR-2, FRCMS and TPI. He is married to the former Alison Poe of Barboursville, West Virginia, and they have four children: Jaxson, Jett, Hensley and Jude.

Thomas Rhett & Rhett Akins Debut a Song For Dads

Thomas Rhett & Rhett Akins Debut a Song For Dads

During an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry this past weekend Thomas Rhett debuted a new song that he and his dad, Rhett Akins, are going to be releasing this Wednesday – just in time for Father’s Day this upcoming Sunday.

Thomas posted, “Announced from the Grand Ole Opry stage tonight with my dad that I’ll be releasing a new one called ‘Things Dads Do’ on June 16th in honor of Father’s Day. More soon but get excited”

Of course Thomas making music with his dad is no surprise – several of Thomas’ songs include his dad as a co-writer…including his number-one hit “What’s Your Country Song,” where Thomas even went a step further, “I actually threw one of my dad’s song titles, ‘That Ain’t My Truck,’ in the second verse.”

Thomas continues, “As we started to kinda craft this song, we had the chorus first, and then we were trying to figure out where to take the verses.  And we kinda thought, what if we could tell a story in the verses through using some of our favorite song titles, whether it’s from the 80s or from the 90s or now.  I remember the first line that I spit out was, ‘Are you heart broke because you know that ain’t your truck in her drive,’ literally as a joke, just cause dad was sittin’ there.  And as we started to write the song, it felt like it just fit.  It was pretty funny, but I’m glad dad got a shout out in that song.”

Of course that hit is from Thomas’ album Country Again – Side A, which features the title track, “Country Again.”

Chase Martin Finds Her “Forever + 1” Thanks To Her Sister’s Wedding

Chase Martin Finds Her “Forever + 1” Thanks To Her Sister’s Wedding

Chase Martin‘s new song “Forever + 1” was inspired by her sister’s wedding.

Chase says “All of the songs I write are close to my heart, of course, but ‘Forever + 1’ is just beyond special to me.”

Chase walked in a writing session with Phil Barton and Joe Fox with the thought that she wanted to create a very personal song for her sister’s big day.

Chase shares the story, “When I went into my co-writing session in Nashville that day, I just wanted to write a song for my sister’s upcoming wedding that would leave her with lasting memories on her special day. Who knew it would become my next single?!”

She adds, “I wanted the video to be simple and just really showcase the song, so we had me sitting in a dive bar singing it, just me and a piano – the original way the song was written. The video crew made my exact vision happen and they were such a blast to work with.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – An offensive explosion highlighted by six total home runs and a six-run fifth inning led No. 2 Tennessee to a 15-6 win over No. 14 LSU Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, earning the Vols a trip to the College World Series for the first time in 16 years.

The Vols’ trip to Omaha for the College World Series marks just the fifth time in program history and first time since 2005. The victory also gives UT 50 wins on the season—just the third time in program history that Tennessee has reached that plateau and first time since 1995.

Tennessee’s 15-run output stands as its most ever in a super regional game. The Vols’ NCAA Tournament program record six home runs came from five different players, as Jake Rucker (two), Connor PavolonyDrew GilbertJordan Beck and Evan Russell all went deep.

Rucker and Beck had three hits apiece to lead UT offensively. The duo also had four and three RBIs, respectively. Russell and Pavolony each contributed two hits on the afternoon.

On the mound for Tennessee, starter Blade Tidwell earned his 10th win of the season. Tidwell gave up seven hits on the afternoon, four of which came during the final two innings of his seven-inning outing.

Sunday’s scoring got off to a quick start, as both teams traded home runs in the first inning. Playing as the visiting team, Tennessee struck first in the top of the first inning with a two-run shot by Rucker to left center field. The Tigers quickly responded with a home run of their own, a solo shot from Dylan Crews.

After a scoreless second inning for both teams, Rucker and Crews each hit their second homers of the day in the third inning, exchanging solo shots.

Entering the fourth with a one-run lead, the Vols broke the game open over the next two innings, scoring two runs in the fourth and tacking on six more during an explosive fifth inning.

In the fourth, it was Pavolony that got Tennessee on the board with a two-run homer that scored Beck after he lead off with a single.

In the decisive fifth inning, Gilbert and Beck both homered, while Liam Spence and Rucker also drove in runs. The Tigers made two pitching changes during the inning in an effort to stop the Vols’ offensive onslaught.

LSU was able to add four runs during the sixth and seventh innings, but Tennessee responded by adding on four more runs of its own in the eighth and ninth innings to quell any hope of a comeback for the Tigers.

TIGERS TAMED: Between the teams’ three-game regular season series and this weekend’s Super Regional, Tennessee combined to go 5-0 against LSU this season. It marks just the fifth time in program history that the Vols have defeated the same team five times in one season and the first time since 1984 that LSU has lost to the same team five times in one season.

ANOTHER MULTI-HOME RUN PERFORMANCE: With Jake Rucker’s two-home run performance against the Tigers, seven different Tennessee players now have at least one game of multiple jacks this season. The Vols have 11 total occurrences of one player hitting multiple home runs in a single game this season.

DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS: Earning his 10th win of the season Sunday, Blade Tidwell became Tennessee’s second pitcher to reach double-digit wins this season, joining Chad Dallas (11 wins).

It marks the third time in program history and first time since 2005 that the Vols have two pitchers with 10 or more wins apiece. In 2005, Luke Hochevar (15) and James Adkins (10) both reached double digit wins, while in 1995, R.A. Dickey (14) and Ryan Meyers (10) accomplished the feat.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A dominant effort on the mound by Chad Dallas and a three-run sixth inning led No. 2 Tennessee to a 4-2 victory over the No. 14 LSU Tigers in game one of the Knoxville Super Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Saturday night.

For the first time in program history, Tennessee (49-16) hosted a Super Regional game. In what was an electric environment, a three-run sixth inning provided the timely spark No. 2 Tennessee needed to claim the win over the Tigers (38-24) in game one.

Jake Rucker and Jordan Beck each went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run while Beck also drove in a run during UT’s big sixth inning. Luc Lipcius also had a hit and an RBI for the Big Orange while Drew Gilbert and Connor Pavolony had an RBI apiece, as well.

Dallas earned his 11th win of the season, dealing a career-high 12 strikeouts on the night, the most in a single game by a Tennessee pitcher this season. In a strong six innings of work, the junior right hander allowed just one earned run on five hits while issuing no walks.

Sean Hunley was dominant in three shutout innings of relief to record his ninth save of the year. The senior from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, had four strikeouts while allowong three hits and no walks.

In the top of the second inning, LSU’s Cade Doughty connected for a solo home run to right field with one out to open the scoring just prior to a 50-minute lightning delay which was sandwiched between the second and third innings.

Once play resumed, LSU came to the plate and Alex Milazzo’s pop up to second base was snagged by a diving Max Ferguson, re-energizing the Tennessee crowd after the delay.

Beck’s leadoff double to left center in the third inning aided the Vols in knotting the score at one, as he would eventually score on an RBI ground out by Pavolony.

Dallas, who had eight strikeouts through four innings, got out of a jam to start the fifth by limiting the Tigers to just one run after LSU had runners on first and second base with no outs. LSU’s lone run in the inning came off a throwing error to third base on a stolen base attempt that skipped into the outfield.

Dallas recorded his ninth and 10th strikeouts of the night in the next two at-bats before a ground out ended the top half of the inning.

Tennessee’s offense got things going in the sixth inning when Max Ferguson battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk. Rucker then stepped up to the plate and blasted a double down the left field line to out runners on second and third. Gilbert then tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice. Another RBI fielder’s choice by Lipcius gave Tennessee a 3-2 lead before Beck singled to right field to plate the game’s final run.

The Vols’ displayed some stellar defense to get out of a small jam in the top of the eighth with a strike em’ out, throw em’ out double play to end the frame and Dylan Crews led off the inning with a single.

LSU threatened again in the ninth, getting runners to second and third with two outs, but Hunley ended the threat and the game with his fourth strike out of the night to lock up the Vols’ 4-2 victory.

Game two of the Knoxville Super Regional between the Vols and Tigers is slated for 3 p.m. ET on Sunday and will be broadcast on ESPN2. A Tennessee win on Sunday would send the Vols to the College World Series for the first time since 2005.

CHEESE WAS DEALING: Chad Dallas’ career-best 12 strikeouts were crucial in Tennessee’s 4-2 victory on Saturday night. The 12 punchouts were the most by a Tennessee pitcher this season.

UNDEFEATED IN SUPER REGIONALS: With Saturday’s win, Tennessee improves to 5-0 all-time in Super Regional games. Victories over East Carolina in 2001 (13-10 and 6-3), and a pair of wins, over Georgia Tech (3-2, 13-3) in 2005 accounted for Tennessee’s four previous Super Regional wins. UT has the most wins without a loss in Super Regional history.
